What is a signature authorization routing chain?

Every institution processes proposals for external funding (grants and contracts requests for funding) through a series of peer and/or fiscal review authorizations. The CSU Chancellor's Office requires certain authorizations, State of California and federal government regulations require additional authorizations.

Currently, the signature authorization routing chain is accomplished by hand and "sneaker-net" via the Blue Sheet+attachments. Soon, the signature authorization routing chain will be accomplished online using Kuali.

Following is a typical routing chain for a single-PI proposal:

1. PI
2. PI's Chair
3. PI's Dean
4. Sponsored Programs
5. Provost
6. Chief Financial Officer

Additional signature authorizations for the following may be applicable:

1. Private Funding (e.g.: non-profit or corporate)
2. New Technology or IT Support
3. New Space/Infrastructure
4. Research Compliance
