Because Kuali Research uses an staged workflow. If you didn't click the "submit" button, it's still in a "saved" status and the content does NOT replace the original.
For example, let's say you started a new record (called a document by Kuali) or you open+edit an existing record. If you never clicked the "save" button and you close or cancel it, Kuali deletes your work. If you click the "save" button Kuali saves your work but doesn't replace the original. If you click the "cancel" button next, Kuali deletes your work. If you click the "submit" button your changes will replace the original.
