SPNN Youth Update

Erika bids SPNN Farewell…

This October I, Erika, will be moving from the Twin Cities to Los Angeles, CA.  I have greatly enjoyed working with so many amazing change-makers, artists, teachers, and students.  You have all taught me so much about the importance of this work and I want to thank you for sharing your creativity, kindness, knowledge and passion with me!  I have loved my time working here and I will very much miss being a part of the day-to-day life of the SPNN family!  I will be staying connected with this work and hope to see many of you in new capacities.   Thank you so very much!

I am excited and pleased to announce that Mary Pumphrey will be my successor.  She is an amazing youth media instructor and community organizer. Please welcome her into this new role!

Neighborhood Video Project explores the Journey Through

Beginning this fall the Neighborhood Video Project heads to The University Corridor where we'll work with youth at Skyline Tower in partnership with CommonBond Communities and the Hamline Midway History Corps to create videos about the unique history of Skyline and the surrounding neighborhood.  Our theme for this leg of NVP is "Journey Through" and we're excited to explore the different topics (including immigrant histories and the role of transportation in shaping the neighborhood) that this theme will lead us to.

For more information about NVP contact Mary Pumphrey at pump...@spnn.org.  To arrange a screening of NVP videos from the Skyline or previous projects contact Ariel Kitch at ki...@spnn.org.

STAY INVOLVED…

“Young people are among the more vulnerable members of our society, and they are also among the least heard. Youth media in an election year gives young people the opportunity to weigh in on the very real issues and policies that affect them—providing that editors and the audience listen. (Kelly Nuxol)”

This next section is dedicated to highlighting resources created by civically engaged youth and youth allies from around the country.  Whether you could vote or not, you have a voice.  Inform yourself, voice your opinions, get involved, tell your story!

MN Youth Council  ~  APPLY NOW

An exciting opportunity for youth in Minnesota has arisen.  A brand new MN Youth Council is currently being created, which will have a direct voice in the Minnesota political process.  The Council, made up of youth across Minnesota, will advise the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Governor on issues relating to MN and USA youth.  There will be 20 delegates in total on the Council.  Below you will find specific details about the role of a delegate.  If you or any youth you know are interested in this opportunity, please contact Joseph Gibson at 612-741-6083, or joewg...@yahoo.com .

The responsibilities of a delegate are as follows:

1.       Attend meetings either in person or by tele-conference

2.       Represent MN youth in all meetings, and vote accordingly

3.       Travel MN and the mid-west giving speeches and meeting with other youth

4.       Represent the decisions of the general assembly (all 20 delegates) to their committees

The requirements of a potential youth delegate:

1.       Be age 15-24

2.       Be interested in politics and current events

3.       Be able to meet once every two weeks in St. Paul at the Capital (we are getting a youth council office set up)

4.       Be willing to work with other delegates to achieve the council’s goals

“Although we are just getting started, no council like this has ever existed in MN.  I want to stress that all youth interested realize that these will be the most powerful 20 youth in MN politics, and they should be dedicated and professional.  Other than that, it will be a fun and amazing opportunity to not only get involved at the legislature, but to have a powerful voice on bills that involve youth.”

St. Paul Youth Commission Subcommittee ~ Apply Now

The Saint Paul Second Shift Youth Commission is the place for young people in Saint Paul to have a voice at city hall! Youth Commissioners work along side other youth and adults in city government and in the community to solve community issues and make Saint Paul the most livable city in America. The Youth Commission is made up of youth from neighborhoods across Saint Paul.

Youth Commissioners:

·         Tackle serious issues that youth face! They design innovative solutions and work with youth and adults to make the solutions happen

·         Help ensure that all youth in Saint Paul have places to get involved, learn, play and make a difference in their community

·         Impact city wide policies and meet government representatives

·         Strengthen their leaderships skills and build youth power!

Young people are citizens and leaders today. If you want to make a difference, you better be at the table – join us now and see what we can do by working together!

The application process for becoming a St. Paul youth commissioner has passed for the 2009-2010 school year.  But don’t worry, you can still participate in the Youth Commission's work!  Any young person in 7th-12th grade can join a Youth Commission Subcommittee.  Subcommittee members can participate fully in community action projects but are not voting members of the city-wide youth commission.

For more information visit http://www.ci.stpaul.mn.us/index.aspx?NID=391 or call 651-247-5538.

Do you know of more nonpartisan (event or organization which does not advocate on behalf of a political party or candidate) action items or youth empowerment resources around the Twin Cities?  If so, please send them to ebac...@spnn.org.  Thanks!

Pay it Forward Foundation Grant

The Pay it Forward Foundation offers students the opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.

Your school, church or community youth group may apply for this $500 mini-grant to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to gra...@payitforwardfoundation.com.

For more information please visit http://payitforwardfoundation.org/educators/grant.html or e-mail in...@payitforwardfoundation.org.
