YIP Final Screening a Success

After six intense weeks of filmmaking, on August 26th, the Youth Intern Program (YIP) held its final celebration and documentary premiere screening.  Interns, mentors, community members, family, and friends gathered to watch the documentary premieres and to celebrate the completion of a successful internship.  One of the documentaries produced during YIP examines the challenges of paying for college and in it, two high school students share their struggles and concerns about paying for college.  The other documentary explores sex education in MN and the choices teens make around sex.  It features a candid discussion with teens about sex and very insightful information about our local sexual education system.  Both documentaries highlight local resources for teens interested in these issues.

We would like to congratulate the YIP interns on completion of their public service announcements and documentary films!   Thank you for all of the hard work, creativity, and energy put into these honest and heartfelt pieces.  Make sure to tune into YTV Mondays @ 7:30 in the month of October to watch these inspiring films!

For more information about YIP, please contact Andrea Lehmann at (651) 361-8141 or leh...@spnn.org.

Peer Mentors Work In SPNN Youth Summer Classes:

This summer, five youth producers who have been involved in SPNN Youth programs in the past assisted with each of our programs and classes. Here’s what Youth Intern Program Peer Mentor Stacy Vang blogged about why she returned to SPNN:

“The reason I am back at SPNN is because last year YIP was so amazing that I've decided to come back and be a mentor and give YIP my support. Not to mention, SPNN is the coolest place that you could ever be with. And this time back, I really want to learn how to be a great mentor and to support those that need my support and to help out with all of my mentors/supervisors. So that is what I'm looking for.”

Supported by the St. Paul Youth Job Corps, the peer mentors met three times as a group to share teaching strategies and learn facilitation skills to use while they were assisting with classes. In the media lab, they did everything from leading camera exercises to working with production groups on editing. Thanks to all of our peer mentors for the hard work they put in to make our summer classes run smoothly.

For more information about our peer mentors or to learn about future opportunities, contact Nicola Pine at pi...@spnn.org .

Digital Storytelling Class Wraps

SPNN Youth Programs completed its last Connections class of the summer with Digital Storytelling.  Taught by Sai Thao, and assisted by Abby and Tyi, this two week class tackled some serious topics in their narrative and documentary films: health care, employer discrimination, and social outcasting.  The final videos will be aired on SPNN’s Youth Channel in October, and will also be featured on SPNN Youth’s website.  Check out their awesome videos!

·         Free Lecture @ William Mitchell Law School ~ Free speech and the difference students of all ages can make

Free speech and the difference students of all ages can make
For all who care about free speech… you are invited to the William Mitchell College at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, to hear Mary Beth Tinker
talk about free speech and the difference students of all ages can make when they develop an informed opinion, take a stand, and fight to be heard.

Mary Beth was the central figure in Tinker vs. Des Moines.  She was 13 when she was suspended for wearing a black armband to school in protest of
the Vietnam War.  She felt her First Amendment rights were violated and ended up taking her case to the U.S. Supreme Court. She won.

Today she travels the country encouraging students to get involved, form opinions, and be heard.

She’s a magnificent speaker and everyone is encouraged to attend and bring your children.  Regardless of political affiliation, you will be inspired.

You can learn more at www.wmitchell.edu.

The Presidential Election is over, how do I stay Involved?

“Young people are among the more vulnerable members of our society, and they are also among the least heard. Youth media in an election year gives young people the opportunity to weigh in on the very real issues and policies that affect them—providing that editors and the audience listen. (Kelly Nuxol)”

This next section is dedicated to highlighting resources created by civically engaged youth and youth allies from around the country.  Whether you could vote or not, you have a voice.  Inform yourself, voice your opinions, get involved, tell your story!

MN Youth Council  ~  APPLY NOW

An exciting opportunity for youth in Minnesota has arisen.  A brand new MN Youth Council is currently being created, which will have a direct voice in the Minnesota political process.  The Council, made up of youth across Minnesota, will advise the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Governor on issues relating to MN and USA youth.  There will be 20 delegates in total on the Council.  Below you will find apecific details about the role of a delegate.  If you or any youth you know are interested in this opportunity, please contact Joseph Gibson at 612-741-6083, or joewg...@yahoo.com .

The responsibilities of a delegate are as follows:

1.       Attend meetings either in person or by tele-conference

2.       Represent MN youth in all meetings, and vote accordingly

3.       Travel MN and the mid-west giving speeches and meeting with other youth

4.       Represent the decisions of the general assembly (all 20 delegates) to their committees

The requirements of a potential youth delegate:

1.       Be age 15-24

2.       Be interested in politics and current events

3.       Be able to meet once every two weeks in St. Paul at the Capital (we are getting a youth council office set up)

4.       Be willing to work with other delegates to achieve the council’s goals

“Although we are just getting started, no council like this has ever existed in MN.  I want to stress that all youth interested realize that these will be the most powerful 20 youth in MN politics, and they should be dedicated and professional.  Other than that, it will be a fun and amazing opportunity to not only get involved at the legislature, but to have a powerful voice on bills that involve youth.”

Do you know of more nonpartisan (event or organization which does not advocate on behalf of a political party or candidate) action items or youth empowerment resources around the Twin Cities?  If so, please send them to ebac...@spnn.org.  Thanks!

Pay it Forward Foundation Grant

The Pay it Forward Foundation offers students the opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.

Your school, church or community youth group may apply for this $500 mini-grant to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to gra...@payitforwardfoundation.com.

For more information please visit http://payitforwardfoundation.org/educators/grant.html or e-mail in...@payitforwardfoundation.org.
