SPNN Programs Update

On
Saturday, October 25th youth from around the metro area gathered
at the Walker Art Center for the Twin Cities Youth
Media Network’s All City Youth
Film Showcase. Eighteen youth produced short films were screened, including
three documentaries produced during SPNN Youth
programs this summer. The showcase was curated by a team of youth producers
from around the city, including Set It
Up crewmember Camila Davila, who watched over 70 submissions to
assemble the screening of documentary, experimental, animated, and
narrative films.
The
SPNN Youth produced
documentaries screened were: We’re
Screwed (Youth Intern
Program), The Good, The Bad, The Ugly:
Gang Life in Saint Paul
(Youth Intern
Program), and Obama and Race: The Truth (Real
Reality TV). Filmmakers Zac Morris, Hasani Harris, Jasmyn Turner, Frankie
McNamara, and Eric Monyancha took the stage with other filmmakers to answer
questions from fans after the screening.
Congrats
to all the filmmakers!

Election 2008 Resources
“Young
people are among the more vulnerable members of our society, and they are
also among the least heard. Youth
media in an election year gives young people the opportunity to weigh in on
the very real issues and policies that affect them—providing that
editors and the audience listen. (Kelly Nuxol)”
This next
section is dedicated to resources created by civically engaged youth and
youth allies from around the country. Whether you can vote or not, you
have a voice. Inform yourself, voice your opinions, tell your story!
Future5000.com – Best connector to
the local youth movement in most states, is a directory of progressive youth
organizations across the US.
Future
5000 is the virtual spinal cord of today's youth
movement.
Genvote.org - Generation Vote members are
united in the belief that the young people most directly affected by the
social, economic and environmental policies up for debate this year are the
natural visionaries and leaders of social change. Grounded in this principle,
we aim to move the issues and perspectives of impacted young people from
the periphery to the very center of the national dialogue.
Wiretapmag.org – Best magazine
covering youth issues and the youth movement — WireTap is a national news and
culture magazine by and for socially conscious youth. Our online community
promotes social justice, inspires action and gives young people a voice in
the media.
CampusActivism.org – Most comprehensive
connector site on campus activism. Good calendars of events.
YoungVoter.net - The League of Young Voters Education
Fund (LYVEF)
empowers young people
nationwide to participate in the democratic process – with a
focus on non-college youth from low-income communities and communities of
color. LYVEF makes civic engagement relevant by
meeting young people where they are, working on issues that affect their
lives, and providing them with tools, training, and support to become
viable players in the civic process.

Pay it Forward
Foundation Grant
The Pay it Forward
Foundation offers students the opportunity to identify what they consider
to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as
homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness
experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the
alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward
Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.
Your school, church
or community youth group may apply for this $500
mini-grant to fund a one time project with a Pay
It Forward focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to gra...@payitforwardfoundation.com.
