St. Pascal’s Tour
On
January 26th, eleven 2nd and 3rd grade
students from St. Pascal Baylon Catholic School toured SPNN’s
studios. SPNN Youth Programs staff helped the students produce a
newscast about exciting events that have happened at their school. The
tour was a fun event for all – the students enjoyed learning about
the studio and getting hands on video experience, and SPNN staff had fun
hearing about some of the interesting events happening at St.
Pascals.
If
your school or community group would like to set up a tour of SPNN, please
contact Erika Backberg, Youth Distribution and Outreach Coordinator, at Back...@spnn.org
or 651-298-8919.

The University of Minnesota
School of Public Health PSA Contest
The University of
Minnesota School of Public Health is sponsoring its 3rd annual
“It’s Global” Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest. School of Public Health (SPH) officials hope
it will attract talented novice and seasoned filmmakers from across the
country and beyond to heed the call and submit their work. The contest
provides filmmakers an opportunity to showcase their original work while
making a statement on global public health topics such as pollution,
nutrition, refugee health, climate change, clean water, infectious disease
and preparing for natural disasters.
Entrants will get to test their talent as they describe a public health
problem, identify a potential solution and present, via film media, a clear
call to action. The entries must be 30 seconds or less (without credits).
Select entries will be showcased, Monday, April 6, 2009, and the $250 youth
category first-place prize and the adult category $500 first-place prize
will be awarded. All entries will be screened throughout SPH sponsored
National Public Health Week Film Festival (April 6-11) in Minneapolis. The 2008 PSA Contest winners
were all under the age of 14. Trish Peterson, Saddie Haddow, and Emily
Sylvestre wrote, directed, and composed the music for their PSA called
“Alone.” To view past entries, including the 2008 winners,

College Exploration Tips: Choosing a College, Getting
Scholarships, Avoiding Scholarship Scams
It's
never too early to start planning for college. There are many different
types of colleges, so you need to think about what programs you are interested
in, do some research and visit campuses to see which type fits best with
your personality, budget and career plans. Also,
make sure to speak with parents, guidance counselors,
admissions counselors at various schools, to make sure that you
know all your best options. The following are a few resources to help you
get started.

The Presidential Election is over, how do I
stay Involved?
“Young
people are among the more vulnerable members of our society, and they are
also among the least heard. Youth
media in an election year gives young people the opportunity to weigh in on
the very real issues and policies that affect them—providing that
editors and the audience listen. (Kelly Nuxol)”
This next
section is dedicated to highlighting resources created by civically engaged
youth and youth allies from around the country. Whether you could vote or
not, you have a voice. Inform yourself,
voice your opinions, get involved, tell your story!

Urgent Action Needed!
You may have heard by now that Gov. Pawlenty has proposed cutting the arts by 50 percent,
and eventual elimination of the State Arts Board after 2011,
as part of a package of budget changes intended to balance the state's
budget. The Governor's budget proposal flies in the face of the clear
message sent by voters in the passage of the Amendment: that we want MORE
investment in the arts and culture, not less.
That is why
it is important for you to do the following to help the arts:
We've generated 550 letters so far. Help us deliver 1000 letters.
1. Send a letter to your legislator today saying you want them to protect
the arts. You can do it in 5 minutes with our simple Arts Action
Center. We give you talking points and set it up, all you
have to do is enter your name and address and the letter will go
automatically to the right elected officials.
Do you know of more nonpartisan (event or organization
which does not advocate on behalf of a political party or candidate) action
items or youth empowerment resources around the Twin Cities? If so, please
send them to ebac...@spnn.org.
Thanks!

The Fred Rogers Memorial Scholarship
The Academy of
Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, in association with Ernst &
Young LLP, is offering three (3) scholarships in honor of Fred Rogers, the
creator and long-time host of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
The scholarships are intended to support and encourage aspiring
undergraduate and graduate students to pursue careers in children’s
media and further the values and principles of Fred Rogers’ work.

Pay it Forward
Foundation Grant
The Pay it Forward
Foundation offers students the opportunity to identify what they consider
to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as
homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness
experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the
alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward
Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.
Your school, church
or community youth group may apply for this $500 mini-grant
to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward
focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to gra...@payitforwardfoundation.com.
