Jairo Yanes Munoz named SPNN’s Youth Producer of the Year

On May 12th, at SPNN’s Annual Meeting, Jairo Yanes Munoz was surprised when he heard his named called for the SPNN Youth Producer of the Year award.  Jairo was chosen for the award because of his commitment to making media that makes a difference in his community.  Jairo first became involved at SPNN when he was selected from well over one-hundred applicants to be one of ten to take part in the summer 2007 SPNN Youth Intern Program.  As an intern, Jairo made a heartfelt public service announcement about teen depression and also shared the incredible story of his journey from Guatemala in a documentary about immigration.  The following summer, Jairo was hired as a peer mentor for the summer 2008 intern program and did a wonderful job.  In addition to being involved in SPNN Youth Programs, Jairo is also an active Access member who helps his church make videos for broadcast on SPNN.  One peer mentor applicant, when describing why she wanted to become a peer mentor, explained with admiration that she wanted to be like Jairo.  Congratulations, Jairo!

TCYMN Straight Shot Youth Media Summit

On Sunday, May 17th, 25 youth participated in the first annual TCYMN (Twin Cities Youth Media Network) Straight Shot Media Summit at the Central Library in downtown Minneapolis.  The summit was organized by a group of 12 youth and 5 mentors from various youth media organizations around the city, including 4 organizers from SPNN Youth. The goal of the summit was for youth from different youth media organizations around the Twin Cities to get to know each other and have a chance to stretch themselves by working on a media project together on a tight timeline.  At the beginning of the day, youth were divided up into groups of 5, and given a genre and prop.  By 3:30 PM, all of the videos were shot and edited and all attendees gathered for the screening.  Three local celebrity media makers served as judges, Squid Squared, Viva and Jerry, and prizes were given for Best Use of Prop, Best Use of Genre, and Best Overall Video.  There was also an Audience Pick award.  After the screening, there was a pizza party and a performance by a local youth spoken word group.

Four youth from SPNN – Niambi Burns, Cameron Mitchell, CJ Beacham, and Courtney Igbo-Ogbonna attended the summit and said they had a great time.  Cameron’s group won two awards – Best Overall Video and Audience Pick!!!  We hope to hold the Summit again next year, and thank all the TCYMN members and volunteers for making it happen! We’ll post the 6 videos created during the summit on our website soon.

Set It Up Wraps It Up

On Tuesday, May 26th the Set It Up crew met for the last time to screen the third episode of the season, “Teens in the City.” The episode featured a series of profiles of teens doing good things in the community including: Johnson Senior and Vessey High Schools’ JROTC programs, St. Paul Open School’s Kids Against Hunger program, the Lunch Box Dance Crew, and the Set It Up crew.

We said our goodbyes over dinner on the West Side, but we are (and you should) be looking forward to 2 more episodes which will be making their way to YTV this summer. You can catch the premiere of “Teens in the City” in June on YTV, Mondays at 3 and 7PM and in July catch our “Best of 2008-2009” episode with some of our favorite segments from the season. Watch for applications to join next years crew, right here in your trusty SPNN E-newsletter come August!

The Presidential Election is over, how do I stay Involved?

“Young people are among the more vulnerable members of our society, and they are also among the least heard. Youth media in an election year gives young people the opportunity to weigh in on the very real issues and policies that affect them—providing that editors and the audience listen. (Kelly Nuxol)”

This next section is dedicated to highlighting resources created by civically engaged youth and youth allies from around the country.  Whether you could vote or not, you have a voice.  Inform yourself, voice your opinions, get involved, tell your story!

MN Youth Council  ~  APPLY NOW

An exciting opportunity for youth in Minnesota has arisen.  A brand new MN Youth Council is currently being created, which will have a direct voice in the Minnesota political process.  The Council, made up of youth across Minnesota, will advise the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the Governor on issues relating to MN and USA youth.  There will be 20 delegates in total on the Council.  Below you will find apecific details about the role of a delegate.  If you or any youth you know are interested in this opportunity, please contact Joseph Gibson at 612-741-6083, or joewg...@yahoo.com.

The responsibilities of a delegate are as follows:

-          Attend meetings either in person or by tele-conference

-          Represent MN youth in all meetings, and vote accordingly

-          Travel MN and the mid-west giving speeches and meeting with other youth

-          Represent the decisions of the general assembly (all 20 delegates) to their committees

The requirements of a potential youth delegate:

-          Be age 15-24

-          Be interested in politics and current events

-          Be able to meet once every two weeks in St. Paul at the Capital (we are getting a youth council office set up)

-          Be willing to work with other delegates to achieve the council’s goals

“Although we are just getting started, no council like this has ever existed in MN.  I want to stress that all youth interested realize that these will be the most powerful 20 youth in MN politics, and they should be dedicated and professional.  Other than that, it will be a fun and amazing opportunity to not only get involved at the legislature, but to have a powerful voice on bills that involve youth.”

Do you know of more nonpartisan (event or organization which does not advocate on behalf of a political party or candidate) action items or youth empowerment resources around the Twin Cities?  If so, please send them to ebac...@spnn.org.  Thanks!

Pay it Forward Foundation Grant

The Pay it Forward Foundation offers students the opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such worthwhile projects.

Your school, church or community youth group may apply for this $500 mini-grant to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to gra...@payitforwardfoundation.com.

For more information please visit http://payitforwardfoundation.org/educators/grant.html or e-mail in...@payitforwardfoundation.org.
