Youth Advisory
Committee, Strikes Again!
Youth Advisory Committee (YAC)
is a group of youth producers who do special projects, give input on SPNN
Youth, and work to build a youth media community at SPNN (and beyond). In
the past YAC has organized screenings, made fliers, helped organize and plan
workshops and a booth at the state fair, and more. Check out
http://spnnyac.blogspot.com/ for some past meeting notes. YAC is open to
any youth producer at SPNN
Our first meeting will be Monday, October 6th
from 3PM-5PM. We’ll be working on revamping the
media lab. Hopefully getting some comfortable chairs or painting or getting

SPNN Americorps
Members Return for Year Two!
We want to extend an
enthusiastic “welcome back” to Peter Kirschmann and Mary Pumphrey as they begin their second year of
service at SPNN. Mary and Peter are both Americorps members through the
Community Technology Empowerment Project (CTEP), a program that bridges
the digital divide by providing technology resources and training to
underserved communities in the Twin Cities. Peter works with the Set
it Up program and the Youth Advisory Committee, and Mary runs SPNN
Youth’s Open Lab (SOL) and is working to increase online distribution
of youth media through the National Youth Media Access Project (NYMAP).
We’re excited have them back for another year, and appreciative of
all of their contributions during year one.

Join YIG TV!
The YMCA Youth in Government
program provides a unique, hands-on, opportunity for youth to learn about
their government. In this hands-on intensive program, participants have the
opportunity to participate in various roles in the government, in what is
called a “Model Assembly”. They may be a governor,
legislator, lobbyist, judge, etc for a four day period passing bills,
debating issues, and negotiating with the different branches of
government. Participants may also choose to spend their time
exploring the role that media plays in government by taking part in the
production of their own daily newspapers, nightly television news
broadcasts, or daily radio station programming.
SPNN has been a partner of YIG
for many years, and hosts the YIG TV program, which produces 3 nightly
newscasts and talkshows. This is a great opportunity for young people
interested in building their media skills, and deepening their
understanding of the inner workings of the government.
We are looking for Saint Paul youth who
would be interested in joining the YIG TV crew. No experience is
necessary! If you are interested, please contact Nicola Pine at SPNN
(pi...@spnn.org),
or your local YMCA. While this is a fee-based program, scholarships
are available. The deadline for applications is Tuesday October 7th.

Pay it Forward Foundation Grant
The Pay it Forward Foundation offers students the
opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their
communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth
violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital
and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from
the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such
worthwhile projects.
Your school, church or community youth group may apply
for this $500 mini-grant
to fund a one time project with a Pay It Forward
focus. Applications will be accepted anytime by email to gra...@payitforwardfoundation.com.
