PAID SPNN SUMMER YOUTH INTERN PROGRAM ~ APPLY NOW
YIP
is an intensive paid internship program
where St. Paul
high school students work with mentors,
and each other, to make
meaningful media about community issues. This program provides young people, entering 9th-12th grade
in the fall, with hands-on media
production experience. No previous media production experience is
required. YIP seeks applicants motivated to learn media production
and to make change in their community. Interns learn camera operation, interviewing,
and digital editing through the production of Public Service Announcements
(PSAs) and documentaries.CLICK HERE TO VIEW 2008 YIP VIDEOS
The program
runs from July 20th through August 28th,
2009. Interns commit to four hours a day, in the
afternoon, for four days a week. Bus passes are provided, and after
successful completion, youth interns receive two high school elective credits
and a cash stipend. A downloadable application and online application are
also available @ http://spnn.org/youth.

SPNN Youth
Media Monday
SPNN is the
place to be on Mondays after school from 3-5 pm. Youth can come to
Media Monday to work on independent projects at SPNN Youth Open Lab (SOL),
learn new video skills at workshops, and watch youth-produced and other
films at screenings.

CTEP Stop
Motion Animation Day!
On Friday,
March 20th SPNN hosted the Community Technology Empowerment
Project (CTEP) Americorps members for a day of media production. Peter
Kirschmann, CTEP with SPNN Youth, and Oanh Vu, CTEP at the Science Museum
of MN, led a stop-motion animation training for the rest of the corps
during the afternoon. The Americorps members worked on producing short
videos using objects and toys they brought from home. You can watch their
finished products in our Media
Library. (Or paste http://www.spnn.org/departments/youth/category/video-tags/ctep
into your browser)
For the
training, they used SAM
Animation (http://www.samanimation.com),
a free software that you can try at home (or at SPNN on Mondays from 3-5PM
during SPNN Youth Open Lab).

St. Matt’s Tech Club
Visits SPNN
On Monday,
March 9th students from the Neighborhood Learning Community-St.
Matt’s Tech Club visited SPNN for a studio tour and production
exercise. After a behind the scenes tour of SPNN, SPNN Youth staff assisted
the Tech Club members in producing a roundtable conversation about
“media cool” and “actual cool” images from
different magazines. Through the production the students worked out why
they liked particular photographs and what problems they thought there was
with the pictures, and got to try out video production in Studio 1.
If your
school or community group would like to set up a tour of SPNN, please
contact Erika Backberg, Youth Distribution and Outreach Coordinator, at Back...@spnn.org or

The Presidential
Election is over, how do I stay Involved?
“Young
people are among the more vulnerable members of our society, and they are
also among the least heard. Youth media in an election year gives young
people the opportunity to weigh in on the very real issues and policies
that affect them—providing that editors and the audience listen.
(Kelly Nuxol)”

MN Youth
Council ~ APPLY NOW
An exciting
opportunity for youth in Minnesota has arisen. A brand new MN Youth Council is currently being created, which
will have a direct voice in the Minnesota political process.
The Council, made up of youth across
Minnesota, will advise the House of Representatives, the Senate,
and the Governor on issues relating to MN and USA youth. There will
be 20 delegates in total on
the Council. Below you will find apecific details about the role of a
delegate. If you or any youth you know are interested in this
opportunity, please contact Joseph Gibson at 612-741-6083, or joewg...@yahoo.com.
The
responsibilities of a delegate are as follows:
-
Attend
meetings either in person or by tele-conference
-
Represent MN
youth in all meetings, and vote accordingly
-
Travel MN and
the mid-west giving speeches and meeting with other youth
-
Represent the
decisions of the general assembly (all 20 delegates) to their committees
The
requirements of a potential youth delegate:
-
Be age 15-24
-
Be interested
in politics and current events
-
Be able to
meet once every two weeks in St. Paul at the Capital (we are getting a
youth council office set up)
-
Be willing to
work with other delegates to achieve the council’s goals
“Although
we are just getting started, no council like this has ever existed in MN.
I want to stress that all youth interested realize that these will be
the most powerful 20 youth in MN politics, and they should be dedicated and
professional. Other than that, it will be a fun and amazing
opportunity to not only get involved at the legislature, but to have a
powerful voice on bills that involve youth.”
Do you know
of more nonpartisan (event or organization which does not advocate on behalf
of a political party or candidate) action items or youth empowerment
resources around the Twin Cities? If so, please send them to ebac...@spnn.org.

Pay it Forward Foundation Grant
The Pay it Forward Foundation offers students the
opportunity to identify what they consider to be the challenges of their
communities. They tackle such problems as homelessness, pollution, youth
violence, literacy issues, the loneliness experienced by long-term hospital
and nursing home patients, and the alienation of today's at-risk youth from
the community. The Pay It Forward Foundation provides seed money for such
worthwhile projects.
Your school, church or community youth group may
apply for this $500 mini-grant to fund a one time
project with a Pay It Forward focus.
Applications will be accepted anytime by email to gra...@payitforwardfoundation.com.
