Hi again,

I just wanted you all to know that the SPM and SPM-P Spanish forms will be offered on the Online Evaluation System starting in the summer.

Related, SPM-2 is going to bring a lot of translation with it, and I’d like to do some kind of Spanish/English equivalency study. To do that we need to get the translation finalized during data collection so that we can run the studies. I guess that’s just an early heads-up that there might be some work to do with the translator (likely Susana Urbina) on back-translations sooner rather than later. It might be easier to appoint one person to be the primary point of contact with the translator, but you can decide.

Nothing to do on this now. We’ll get the forms prepped for translation once all the research forms, both digital and paper, are in the field.

Thanks, John.

Will there be paper copies of the Spanish versions? This would be really important.

This is great news about Spanish forms for the SPM and SPM-P! I am willing to be the point person with the translator, but if someone else wants to take on that role, that's okay with me too.

Looking ahead, I'm sure eventually we all will want the other SPM forms (Infant, Teen, Adult) to also be translated into Spanish.

Thanks, Diane,

That sounds good --having a single author contact for the translator will make things go easier.

I was actually making the distinction (in my mind anyway) between SPM-2 and the current version. For SPM-2, we are planning to have every form translated into Spanish (currently 18 forms, soon to be 20 when we add the adult forms).

Yes, it's great. I am a concerned that it is only the online format as the carbon forms would be easier for this population.

I seem to remember being told a long time ago by WPS that the Spanish version would only be on line.  Didn't we have a discussion about that and expressed our concerns?

Probably – I think the current thinking is that we ought to put up what we have for SPM and SPM-P, at least online. The printable can be a stop-gap for paper users until SPM-2; and SPM-2 will be the full package.

Wonderful.
I just saw the additional author replies about the carbon-paper forms. I agree that these are very helpful to have, and would be optimal with the Spanish translations. This raised the question for me: Will we continue to have carbon-paper rating forms for the English forms?

If we didn't have any reversed items, plain paper would probably make more sense, but I think autoscore (i.e., carbon paper) forms will still be the best option for SPM-2.

Well, I think we all agree on autoscore being very helpful (I had forgotten the technical term for the carbon paper style). It would be ideal if all of the SPM-2 forms, including translations (at least the Spanish versions, which will be widely used) could have an Autoscore paper version.

Yes, that's our default position at this point -- that the Spanish forms will be produced in the same manner as the English forms (autoscore), and every form gets translated into Spanish.
