Man Utd 2-1 Sporting Lisbon
By Phil McNulty

Cristiano Ronaldo's late strike gave Manchester United victory against
Sporting Lisbon to ensure they finish top of their Champions League
group.

Ronaldo fired in a superb injury-time free-kick to sink battling
Sporting and take the pressure off United for their final group game
away to AS Roma.

Abel beat Tomasz Kuszczak at his near post to put Sporting ahead early on.

But substitute Carlos Tevez levelled from close range on the hour to
set up Ronaldo's grandstand finish.

News conference: Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson

United will now get a more favourable draw in the last 16 knockout
stages after topping Group F.

Ronaldo was restored to their starting line-up after the defeat at
Bolton - but he had little impact on a low-key first 45 minutes.

He did create one chance for Louis Saha with a brilliant flick after
18 minutes, but the striker pulled his shot wide.

Sporting took the lead in bizarre circumstances three minutes later
when Abel's speculative shot from near the touchline caught out
Kuszczak and flew in at his near post.

They could have added a second almost instantly, but Liedson's finish
was ruled out for offside - a marginal decision at best.

As United struggled to maintain any attacking rhythm, Sporting were
shooting on sight and Anderson Polga shocked Kuszczak with a snap-shot
that the keeper held at the second attempt.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson made a double substitution at half-time,
sending on Tevez and Ryan Giggs for Nani and Darren Fletcher.

Giggs almost created an equaliser for United after 58 minutes when
Nemanja Vidic met his corner but headed just wide.

United did not have long to wait to restore equality, levelling on the
hour when Ronaldo's shot was deflected in off a combination of Tevez
and Sporting defender Marian Had.

Tevez then set up Ronaldo for a fierce angled drive, but his effort
was well blocked by Sporting keeper Rui Patricio.

Owen Hargreaves was introduced with 12 minutes left, and he almost
scored with only his second touch, forcing another fine save out of
the impressive Patricio from Anderson's pass.

But with time running out and United looking like they might need
something from their trip to Roma to win their group, Ronaldo fired in
a brilliant swerving free-kick to seal the win.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
"The important thing in the second half was our impetus and the change
of pace, and Carlos Tevez helped that with his positional play.
"His running caused them problems and I'm delighted he got the
equaliser because he deserved that.

"It is important in the sense that when we go to Rome I will be able
to use all my squad. One or two might not travel because there's an
important game coming up against Liverpool.

"It was a marvellous strike by Cristiano Ronaldo. He's done it before,
he works very hard at that but it was a truly exceptional goal.

"I think that he always wants to do well against his old club because
he owes a lot to Sporting Lisbon - they found him as a boy, he
respects that and has great admiration for the club."

Argentina rise to non-occasion
By Andrew Fraser
BBC Sport in Athens

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/low/olympics_2004/football/3607884.stm
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40011000/jpg/_40011070_argentina203.jpg

Argentina's footballers sank to their knees in pure delight after
ending 11 years of hurt in major competitions by taking Olympic gold.

But you can be sure that if they had been allowed to choose the
setting for their historic triumph, it would not have been a
half-empty stadium

at 10 o'clock in the morning.

While millions of fans in Argentina and Paraguay tuned in to watch the
first Olympic final between South American nations for 76 years, most
of

Athens was having a Saturday morning lie-in.

Not even pleas from Fifa president Sepp Blatter and Greek Football
Association chief Vassilis Gagatsis to fill the stadium could pull in
the punters.

It might have been different if the home nation had not suffered an
early exit from the competition, or if Iraq had not lost to Paraguay
in the

semi-finals.

" It's like asking someone to work from two to four in the morning "
Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa on the early kick-off

But large chunks of empty seats and a noise level that rarely rose
above a low hum were testament to the harsh truth that, at the
Olympics,

the 'people's game' is just another sport.

An evening kick-off would certainly have helped, as it did in Sydney
four years ago.

With the climax of the athletics programme set for Saturday evening,
however, the game was sandwiched into the only available slot at the

Olympic stadium.

"It wasn't a natural time to play," admitted Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa.

"It's like asking a worker to break his natural routine and work from
two to four in the morning."

The build-up to the Games had been marred by an unseemly row between
Fifa and the World Anti-doping Agency, which at one point

threatened to see the football competition called off.

In the end there was an uneasy truce as Fifa signed up to the Wada
code, still indicating that it would follow its own interpretation of
the rules.

When the tournament began, the expected wave of post-Euro 2004
enthusiasm failed to materialise.

ARGENTINA'S 2004 OLYMPICS

Played: 6
Won: 6
Goals scored: 17
Goals against: 0

"At some matches, I could have shaken the hand of everyone in the
stadium," said Blatter.

There was no shortage of talent on display, with European club
managers like Manchester United's Sir Alex Ferguson left fuming at
having to do

without stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gabriel Heinze.

Bielsa took most of his Copa America squad to the Games, including
Heinze and Valencia's Roberto Ayala, in a bid to make up for the

disappointment of losing to Brazil in the final last month.

It paid off as his side took their first football gold courtesy of a
first-half goal from Boca Juniors sensation Carlos Tevez.

The striker's eighth goal of the campaign was enough to deny Paraguay,
who had stunned Brazil in qualifying to book their ticket to Athens.

The runners-up ended up with just nine men on the field, after Emilio
Martinez and Diego Figueredo were sent off in the second half.

And by the time they stood on the podium to receive Paraguay's first
ever Olympic medal, most of the crowd had drifted away, no doubt
looking

forward to an evening of athletics.

Totti ready to give Italy emergency cover (Reuters) Thursday 29 November 2007
Print Email to a friend
Thank you. Your FIFA.com story has been successfully e-mailed to your friend(s).
AS Roma striker Francesco Totti has said he would come out of
international retirement for UEFA EURO 2008 if Italy coach Roberto
Donadoni needed him.

"If I was needed because of some injuries or an emergency (I would be
willing)," the Roma captain told GQ magazine.

Totti took a break from international duty after picking up a 2006
World Cup winners' medal, but then announced he was quitting the
national team completely in July this year.

He added in the GQ interview that he did not want to steal the place
of any of the existing members of the squad and said he only wanted to
be considered as an emergency option.

"It's right that the 22-24 players who have won qualification (to EURO
2008) go. If I took someone's place, it wouldn't be right."

He cited the example of Zinedine Zidane, who came out of international
retirement to help France qualify for, and reach the final of, last
year's FIFA World Cup.

The 31-year-old Totti, who made 58 appearances for Italy scoring nine
goals, had ruled out making an Azzurri return just last week.

Totti's offer is unlikely to tempt Donadoni, who has frequently
expressed irritation at having to answer questions about a player, who
has ruled himself out of his plans.

Meanwhile, Rolando Bianchi has said he aims to win a regular place in
the Manchester City starting lineup to earn a crack at an Italy
call-up.

"My dream is to play for Italy and I want to realise it as soon as
possible," the striker told Mediaset television.

"I'm working hard to win my place here and to have a chance to play
for the national team. I must keep working as I have been and give 200
per cent."
