In early October, after filming wrapped in New York City, further production began at Babelsberg Studios in Berlin and Potsdam, Germany, and would continue there through the end of November.[34][35] Filming in Berlin began with shooting at the former Tempelhof Airport in October, for scenes that actually took place there, such as Donovan's descending from a historic C-54 Skymaster.[36] The prisoner exchange scene was filmed on the Glienicke Bridge (the so-called "Bridge of Spies"), where the historical exchange actually took place in 1962.[37][38] The bridge spans the Havel narrows between Berlin and Potsdam, and was closed to traffic for filming over the last weekend of November.[39][40] German Chancellor Angela Merkel and former president Bill Clinton visited the set to watch the filming of these scenes.[41] Other filming locations included Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial and Marquardt Palace. Principal photography officially ended on December 4, at Berlin Tempelhof. Shooting also took place in Wrocław, Poland, in the second half of November.[34][42] During mid-December, filming took place at Beale Air Force Base, located near Marysville, California.[43] The film was shot on 35mm motion picture film, including Kodak Vision3 250D color negative film 5207 and Vision3 500T color negative film 5219.[44]

In the better second section, Donovan enters the schizophrenic Germany of 1962, when the mortar is still wet on the Berlin Wall. Spielberg trenchantly evokes the craziness of a divided city: a West Berlin strewn with patches of Western luxury, an East Berlin left in poverty and ruins. Hewing close to the historical record (in this case), Spielberg cooks up a spiky political stew from East Germany striving for recognition from the United States, the Soviet Union coolly maintaining dominance over its satellite state, and the two superpowers playing chess, and sometimes chicken, as they maneuver to win back their spies before they leak any secrets.

Bridge of Spies tells the story of Jim Donovan (Tom Hanks), an insurance lawyer who finds himself getting wrapped up in a complicated web of Cold War spies. With his children fearing that any day the commies will drop the bomb, Jim gets tasked with defending an alleged Russian spy, Rudof Abel (Mark Rylance). The idea is to show that in America, even the Ruskies can have their day in court. Donovan aims to supply him with the best defense possible, because after all that is his job, but the judge in the case, the CIA, and the American public have other ideas. Nevertheless, he saves the man from the electric chair, which is fortunate, because the Russians have captured a US spy and will only give him back if Donovan organizes a trade for Abel.

The first exchange took place on February 10, 1962, when U.S. and Soviet Union agents met on the bridge and exchanged captured Soviet spy Rudolf Abel for captured American U2 spy-plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers. After this initial transfer, another peaceful exchange took place in 1964, and then twice more in the 1980s. As far as the records show, the last prisoner exchange took place in 1986, by which time nearly 40 people had been exchanged between Eastern and Western agents on the bridge.

In real life, the remnants of the former borderline remain visible. And for those willing to use their imagination, an ordinary bridge crossing can become something much more clandestine, even if only for a fleeting moment.
