I couldn't help but think of so many of you this week as Obama finally
won the nomination....yeah! I remember so vividly watching the lively
debates together in Kansas City with our different perceptions of what
was really being said and the thrill of sharing the experience. I
still have photos of our "up-close" experience with Hillary in
Houston, and our many discussions of Barack vs. Hillary as a future
president. I wonder what people are saying in your far away countries
now that it's decided, and the real work of Democrats begins. I'm sad
to say that I fear many people in this still racially divided country
will either not vote or vote for McCain simply because of race...but
won't admit it (like my own sister-in-law.) But, it's certainly a
historic moment! I hope it will be like Kennedy in the 60's...a
continued swelling of citizen involvement and optimism across ages and
economic status so we can eradicate the last decade of fear-based
policy with a commitment towards peace, education, universal
healthcare, and more sensible environmental conservation.
I haven't had much work since our tour, except short programs of
several days to a week each, and my next big one will be with a group
of visitors who will study "sustainable development" (mostly men, I
assume, given the subject). I'm sure I'll learn alot and I hope they
are even HALF as much fun as you all were! I'm crossing my fingers
that my short tour scheduled for the end of this month doesn't get
cancelled, as predicted (due to numbers dwindling now to a single
visitor). At least I know that the August group will "go" no matter
what...because it's a multi-regional project.
So, otherwise, I've been searching for an affordable house to buy with
my Dad, to take advantage of the terrible housing market crash (and
unfortunately, the only way I could afford something in this overly
-expensive area.) I hate to profit from someone else's misfortune,
but at least the overly high speculation (and unregulated loan
practices) has resulted in many houses being taken back by banks
anxious to recoup even a partial mortgage price...so, there are
actually properties I can begin to imagine affording (with the
generous financial support of dear old Dad! What a guy!)
That's about it from this side of the ocean...I look forward to more
news from you all when you get a chance. I hear frequently from Rubab
via Internet chat...and an occasional phonecall...what a sweetheart!
I hope to connect with more of my "sisters" soon...
All my love,
Ellen : )
