Hello,

I have the same kind of funny error as it has been recently discussed
here.

I wanted to carry out some calculations on a cluster, but I get this
error message all the time and spinev stops directly after.

"Error: can't authenticate your system clock. Please connect your
computer to the Internet."

I brought up this issue to the people of the cluster, but they meant,
there's no chance to get me an internet connection.

Is there a way the get around this internet-verification ?

Thanks a lot.

Cheers

Markus

PS : I did not manage to start the calculation (it's a huge 2D
simulation with 10spins) with the -cluster option; instead I used -
split. Perhaps that might help ?

Hi Markus,

I am afraid I cannot offer any general solutions to this problem at the time. Perhaps, I'll be able to figure something out in the future. But for now, If your IT people want to have it their way, then you'd have to find a different cluster...

Hi Mikhail,

May I ask by which type of connection (ftp etc.) spinev tries to
establish the internet connection? Maybe my cluster people will grant
me some type of connection if I gave them a more specific information.

In addtion, I am a bit puzzled why spinev works on my workstation in
the lab >>without<< internet connection, but not on the cluster.

Thank you very much

Cheers

Hi Markus,

Your sysadmins should allow outgoing connections to TCP port 13 ("Daytime").
A connection to the internet is not required all the time but only the first time you run the program, and then only occasionally. That's why it works on your workstation, and you also would be able to do calculations on your laptop while traveling, for example.

Hello Mikhail, I know this is a old post but my error is the same so I am posting to it.

I support some workstations where students and staff run spinev .  They have been using it successfully for some time.  Recently some students are getting the error referenced in this old post "Error: can't authenticate your system clock. Please connect your computer to the Internet."   This workstation is connected to the internet.  A tcpdump monitoring the daytime port 13 show access going to a domain at mit  .  When I try a telnet to the domain to see  if I can get to the daytime port 13, I get a Operation timed out message .  This occurs when I am coming from osu's network or when I try the access at home ISP.  Could you help us please?

Thanks,
ray

Hello Ray,

I am aware of these issues and I am working to resolve them. There will be an update released very soon.

Hello Mikhail,

The error "Error: can't authenticate your system clock. Please connect your computer to the Internet." is very strange on our cluster too.

On the same computing node for one user exactly the same spinev executable works and for another user the mentioned error appear.

I found this really strange and I don't understand why it's appearing as there is no particular difference between the users.

Also, generally, on a normal HPC cluster a direct connection to the internet from each computing node is not necessary (and usually avoided)
the necessary updates being done from a local repository.

It seems that Spinev outgoing connections to TCP port 13 ("Daytime") limit drastically its use on HPC clusters and as it's appearing in an unusual
fashion pose really a problem.

As you mentioned "A connection to the internet is not required all the time but only the first time you run the program, and then only occasionally"
it will be great to know where the information regarding the one time established connection is saved which ensure later it's functionality on a computer
disconnected from the internet.

We are trying to find a solution to make spinev work for all NMR group users of our cluster and not only for some of them.

Thank you.

Hello everyone,

I think I found a solution to run spinev on clusters having the computing nodes not connected to the internet.

You have to run a short job initially on the cluster login node, which normally has an internet access and on which the TCP 13 port is opened.

In our case the users home directory is replicated on all nodes using NFS and this solution worked.

But as the spinev Time check occurs from time to time the error could appear again and probably can be solved following the same solution.

Of course, the error can then appear because the port 13 at MIT domain, at which spinev is trying to connect, time out.

Have a good day,

Hello Calin,

Yes, this is how it should be done for now in situations similar to yours! Thanks for posting!
Hopefully, I'll figure out a more transparent solution in the future.

Hi All,

I'm also getting this problem but I am only trying to run Spinevolution on my laptop, not on a cluster. My computer is definitely connected to the internet and it makes no difference whether or not I connect via ethernet cable or wireless.

Can anybody help me?

Hugh

Hi Hugh,

These issue will be resolved after the new version of the program comes out in March.

But for the current version (as well as all the previous ones) it seems that that this error often has something to do with restrictions set by your internet provider or a local system/network setup (like firewall etc.) To circumvent this problem, try connecting your laptop to Internet at a different place (like your home) and run some simulation from there. If it works even once, it should work afterwards even at the place where you are encountering this problem now, at least for some time. If it doesn’t work, please write me, and I’ll try to figure out something else.

Sorry for the trouble.

Best regards,
Mikhail
