Dear Music Lovers, Students, Teachers, and Performers,
 
The Bengali Association of Southern California is delighted to inform you that legendary vocalist, musicologist, and "Guru's Guru" Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty will conduct a "Sur Darshan" masterclass series on "Performing Art of Indian Music" on June 17th at University of California, Irvine, and on June 18th in downtown Los Angeles. Guru-ji will also provide valuable tips on the art of tabla and harmonium accompaniment for Hindustani Vocal Music.
Who will benefit: The masterclass is primarily meant for vocal students and performers of Hindustani Classical and Semi-classical Music, however, it will be beneficial to anyone who has something to do with Hindustani Classical Music, from a casual listener to a true rasika, from a beginner to an advanced student or a teacher, from an instrumentalist to a tabla player.
 
Prerequisites: A good background of Hindustani Ragasangeet is desirable, but you do not have to be a performing singer or a player to attend.
 
Please bring a notebook and a pen with you. Please be there on time so we can start on time and make the most of this wonderful learning opportunity. Please book your spot early to avoid any last minute disappointment. You could attend any one of these events or both events.
 
Outline of the masterclasses:
Sitting right in front of one of the most revered Gurus of our time, at this masterclass series, you will learn:
How to look at a composition
How to approach music performance
How to improvise - improvisations are at the heart of Hindustani Ragasangeet
This will be a very performance based workshop and you will learn all aspects of a performance through a raga and a bandish.
 
Sunday: June 17th at Irvine
6pm-7pm: Pandit-ji will start with some basics and teach the beginners a simple bandish and show them how to approach Indian music, how to improvise.
7pm-7:20pm - Break
7:20pm-9pm: Pandit-ji will now start teaching a raga and go over all aspects of music making
All participants will receive a certificate of completing the workshop and the certificate will be signed by Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty.

6:30 pm - 7:45pm: Pandit-ji will teach a different raga and will go over all aspects of music making with special emphasis on layakari and improvisations

8:00 - 9:30pm - Performance based Lecture Demonstration of various genres of Indian Vocal music.
