To discover a working BIOS password for your Dell, enter the Service Tag from your Dell into our password generator tool. The Service Tag will be documented on a small sticker on the bottom, back, or side of your Dell PC. The Service Tag is a 7 digit...

I made a dumb mistake a month or two ago. I was on vacation (I carried my laptop with me). I wanted to make sure room service folks couldn't boot the system to the Windows login screen, (I trust no one). So, I set the BIOS user password and mistakenly set the admin password as well. I later disabled the user password when I got home from vacation but forgot to do the same for the admin password. A month has gone by since I did this. The other day I needed to make a boot order change to the system and when I receive the admin password screen after entering F2, I then realized I forgot to disable the admin password. I can't remember the password either so I'm locked out of my system's BIOS settings.

I'm expecting a call back from Dell Support to help me resolve this issue without having to crack open the laptop case. Is this possible? I've seen information on the Internet that mentions Dell having a BIOS password generator and all that is needed is the service tag number. I ask because the tier 1 support person I was on the call with didn't seem to knowledgeable to say the least.

Well I guess I'm the luckiest man in the world. This evening I stumbled upon the password I thought I forgot. Now everything is back to normal. However, I have one question about the Vostro 1000 service tag. Why doesn't the Vostro BIOS security screen show the additional numbers to the service tag number. For example, XXXXXXX-ZZZZ. I have no idea what (if any) the rest of the service tag number is (-ZZZZ). As a matter of fact the Vostro 1000 security screen only displays the "enter password" box. Howver, my Latitude C400 displays a different security screen listing the full service tag number. For the Vostro, I only know my first seven numbers on the sticker attached to the bottom of the PC and listed on my invoice. Is there a way to determine what the rest of the tag number is?

Interesting. Because before I rediscovered my password. I found this website which provided a BIOS password discovery utility. The tool prompts you for the first seven numbers (xxxxxxx) and also the second four where the values can be either "-595B" or "-2A7B". Then it gives an eight character password as the result. The password provided enables the user to use it to over-ride the forgotten BIOS password. This worked for my Latitude PC but not for the Vostro because I don't know what the last four numbers are (or should be) for the Vostro's service tag (if any).

I understand completely and I'm not suggesting you give me advice on cracking the BIOS. I'm just confused as the different ways that Dell has made the security screens (through F2) display when entering the BIOS configuration between their different systems. Oh well, its their prerogative. And I guess the Vostro systems have only a seven character service tag. I did execute the command and it gives me no more than what I get from other system utilities like SIW (System Information for Windows). Thanks anyway.

I just bought a hp 2560p elitebook laptop with a big discount. Now I found out that the bios password was set. When I tried to contact the seller, he said this laptop was part of HP demo program return. The bios password was set up by the user, but not given when it was return to HP. He said I would have to contact HP if I want the password. I though I would ask if you can help first. Greatly appreciated!

Some models can clear the password by removing the cmos battery for a few hours, some cannot be cleared this way, you will have to send it to a repair facility that specializes in re setting this type of bios password if removing the cmos battery does not work.

Remove the batter and rtc battery and adapter. Hold the power button for 30 seconds and let it sit for 15 minutes. plug the rtc battery back in and put the battery in and the laptop power on and ask to default the bios. Press enter and it default, but didn't reset the bios password.

I found this article online that might help you, Reset Bios Password. I was working with my win7 laptop on this issue and got that article as one of my reference, it did helped a lot specially it saved my time and money. I hope it will work for you too..see yah

I was playing around with the BIOS settings and somehow I fat fingered the password not once, but twice.. and now I'm locked out of the computer entirely. I was trying to figure out what the difference was between the "User" password, and the "Administrator" password - and the difference is that "User" won't allow the system to boot at all without that password.

I've tried pulling the main power from the tiny little motherboard, and this appears to make no difference with these newer laptops which don't have specific bios batteries to remove. Any suggestions?

So I followed his directions, but it didn't work for me. After a bit of searching, apparently the bios rescue password is tied to whatever the bios thinks the date is.. I can't get my Bios to go back any further than 2012/01/01 though (pulling the power on the motherboard for a few minutes achieved this). The video had a bios of 2002/01/02, which is way older than what I have. I'll have to keep looking.

Thanks for trying, but this didn't work. Hitting Alt +r on the 'enter password' window just resulted in an asterisk being displayed a the entered password. Alt + r never got me to 'enter rescue password' screen. This may work with older versions of the BIOS, but I believe Azus considered this 'backdoor' a security issue and fixed it so it no longer works.

I did some more research on you laptop ,netbook with no cmos battery it has to use battery power and if disconnected will stay viable with static charge that remains in the board .So to drain the board disconnect the battery and hold down the power button for a few minutes then try it and see if it worked if it didn't,disconnect the battery again and leave the battery disconnected for several days till all residual power is drawn off when you think you have all the residual power drained away plug in and try again . Hope this works better

BARELY lift the bottom away (just a little bit) else you'll yank some cables out you won't want to yank out. Peek under the bottom cover and find the ONE CABLE connecting the system board to the battery. Remove it and any NVME drives.

CONNECT THE EXTERNAL POWER CABLE and turn the computer on. The scren will remain blank for a few minutes but eventually go into BIOS setup. Both the user and administrator password will be unset. SAVE THAT CONFIGURATION (F10) and SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER.

Oh thank God! Some mysterious miraculous way I somehow figure it out the administrator password that my ex-wife had set and forgotten! I know that doesn't help you my friends but at least celebrate with me that I just saved $700. Thank you everyone for your input and I hope your journey to find the solution on your end goes well
