The crime of apartheid means inhumane acts of a character similar to those referred to in para 1, committed in the context of an institutionalized regime of systematic oppression and domination by one racial group over any other racial group or groups and committed with the intention of maintaining that regimeFilm Screening: Salt of this SeaWe are hosting a screening of award winning film, Salt of this Sea (Cannes Official Selection, Un Certain Regard). It is about a refugee returning to claim her grandparent's effects left from the Nakba, which expelled over 700 000 Palestinans in 1948. Through the eyes of the protagonist, we confront the Occupation firsthand. As one reviewer has said,"Salt of This Sea compels us to make a choice between the cold comfort of indifference or the knowledge that we can make a difference."Event Link: http://www.facebook.com/events/239021086186911/Wednesday, Feb 29, 6pm, Woodward Room 6, 2329 West Mall, UBCEntry by donationKeynote Address: Nada Elia: Confronting Apartheid: Academic and Cultural Boycott of IsraelNext, we are excited to be hosting Nada Elia, professor at Antioch University, Seattle, organizing committee member of USACBI and founding member of Arab women's activist groups. These images are powerful. Children have no agendas. Their art work is an incredible testament to the lasting trauma suffered from the Assault on Gaza.
The exhibition will begin in Vancouver on Friday, March 9 and we encourage all IAW participants and supporters of Palestine to attend. Guest speaker Barbara Lubin, Founder and Executive Director of the Middle East Children’s Alliance, is a life-long peace, justice and disability rights activist. The collection comes to UBC on March 15. For more details about the exhibition’s visit to Vancouver and a preview of images, see childsviewfromgaza.org.
