Is it possible to have (and define as such) a canonical API
description of included code objects, while still being able to
include descriptions on other pages? I find that Sphinx always
complains about "duplicate object description", and rightly so,
because I don't know how to tell it that the canonical description is
the API docs.

Any clues?

Use :noindex: for those descriptions that shouldn't get linked to.
(I've added that to the warning message now.)

cheers,
