LaTeX limitations in Sphinx?

I am trying to use a few very basic LaTeX features in Sphinx multi-line math mode (from the “ .. math:: “ syntax, not the :math: inline syntax). I’m trying to put underscores in my variable names in math mode, with `\_` and `\textunderscore`. I am also trying to put Roman text into an equation with `\textrm{}`, and I am trying to use the large-sized delimiters such as `\biggl` and `\biggr`. All of these things generate the “not a recognized LaTeX command” error in Sphinx.

These are extremely basic LaTeX commands, so I am wondering: are they available in Sphinx? If so, how do I use them; if not, why not?
