DV footage and high-quality chromakeying are usually said to be incompatible, so how seriously should we take Serious Magic's claim that its Ultra software produces excellent chromakey effects from DV source video?

Our curiosity was roused by Serious Magic's claims that its Ultra software for Windows offers an incredibly easy way to achieve professional chromakey results using DV footage - the more so since we're normally highly dubious of statements that promise ease of use, especially from products with magic in their names.
In truth, we felt we just had to investigate, given that the words DV and pro-quality chromakey don't usually appear together in the same sentence. Many of us have attempted chromakey work on DV footage using our favourite video editor's built-in chroma function. While some NLEs perform chromakeying better than others, we've often had to settle for a mediocre key with the familiar stair-stepping effect along edges. Higher-end keyers, such as The Foundry's Keylight (included with Adobe After Effects Pro 6.5), provide excellent keys, but involve a steep learning curve to master - and aren't cheap either, though After Effects itself is more affordable today than ever before.

Benzene may cause certain types of cancer in humans. Animal studies show acetaldehyde may cause cancer in humans and may cause serious illness or death. Acetal can irritate the upper respiratory tract, eyes, and skin. While the exact risk from using hand sanitizer containing benzene, acetaldehyde, or acetal is unknown, FDA recommends consumers do not use products contaminated with unacceptable levels of benzene, acetaldehyde, or acetal.

Durisan tested its hand sanitizer and found microbial contamination including high levels of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Ralstonia pickettii, which can lead to serious infections, including infection of the skin, soft tissues, lungs or bloodstream. Individuals with compromised immune systems are at increased risk. Infection can occur with use of the contaminated hand sanitizer by consumers or by health care professionals who may also transmit the contaminating bacteria to patients. Use of this contaminated hand sanitizer by health care professionals who tend to an at-risk patient, such as one with cystic fibrosis, could lead to adverse events ranging from a localized infection to lung or bloodstream infections, which could require patient hospitalization or extend an existing hospitalization.

As tends to happen when one collects great glass, I've become a bit of a pixel peeper. I'm not happy about it, but I'll admit it. It has its place and has benefited me over the years through learning and developing techniques, lighting, gear selection, etc. But lately, I feel it's become more of a hindrance than a help to the point that images I liked upon initial review lost some of that magic when I zoomed in and realized they weren't as tack sharp as they seemed.

The 50 1.8 S was one of the two lenses I purchased when I moved to mirrorless with my Z6 years back. It's an incredible lens and ultra sharp, but compared to my previous 35mm and 50mm F-mount lenses, it's large and heavy. The bigger issue, though, is that I simply find it sitting on the shelf a lot. For portrait-style shots with a very prominent subject, I prefer 85mm. And when I want to include more setting/context, I always feel like the 50 just isn't quite wide enough.

Turns out a 40mm prime is one of those "perfect" focal lengths for my style, particularly for fun family snapshot style photos. The lens is very small and ultra light, the perfect complement to a smaller body like the Z6 when shooting casually or wandering about. No, it's not ultra sharp when you start pixel peeping, but it has a look that I like, and the entire point of the new mindset is to NOT pixel peep anyway. It only took a day to realize this lens was a serious home run for me and it will get used a LOT.

Although this lens is anything but cheap or low quality, it has its place in this conversation because I've long been debating which ultra wide zoom to get: the 14-30 or 14-24. I photograph conventions, concerts, and other events for work more and more these days, so I'm always tempted to go with higher quality and faster lenses. With my new anti-pixel peeping mindset, though - not to mention Adobe's impressive new noise reduction performance - it suddenly became an easy choice: smaller size, less weight, screw-in filters, extended range. Bottom line, I'll take it with me more often, which is the entire point.
