Dear Colleagues,

 

Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Odisha and eastern part of India. The flood like situation in Bihar, Gujarat has showed sign of improvement as rain stopped. But, the situation has worsen in Kerala, Maharashtra and Karnataka. The humanitarian agencies in the respective state is closely working with the government.

FLOOD SITUATION IN KERALA AS ON 9TH AUGUST 2019

 

A.     Current situation:

The flood situation has worsen in northern and middle part of Kerala. Red alert in 9 Districts, red alert will continue till tomorrow in 7 districts ( Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malapuram, Wayandu, Kannur, Kasaragod and Idukki) . Water levels in most of the rivers and dams across the state have risen flooding nearby areas.  Major rivers like Manimala, Meenachal, Moovattupuzha, Chaliyar, Valapattanam, Iruvazjinjpuzha and Pamba are have risen.  26 people were killed and over around 22, 000 people are in the 320 relief camps with around 6000 families.

 

Massive landslide occurred in Wayanad district. As many as 40 people are suspected to be trapped under the debris of landslide . Three were rescued. 24 landslides reported so far from Wayanad, Idukki and Malapuram. Idukki cut off from the rest of Kerala, all roads to Idukki blocked due to landslide.

 

B.      Government Response:

·         Three teams of NDRF have been deployed in Wayanad, Malapuram and Idukki districts. State requested 10 more team.

·         12 district administration has ordered closure of all schools in tomorrow

·         On 08 August Chief Minister held conference with senior officials of different government departments to review the flood situation and directed them to remain fully alert and be prepared to tackle the situation promptly and effectively.

·         The chief minister's office has directed district collectors to evacuate people from danger-prone areas

·         District administration, Idukki has advised commuters to avoid travelling through the district.

·         3 teams of NDRF and SDRF have been deployed to carry out relief and rescue operations in the affected districts.

·         The authority has warned against fishing in the sea and travelling to landslide-prone areas and hilly regions. The warnings forwarded to Police, Fire and Rescue Fisheries Department, DD Panchayath, District Information Officer, Executive engineer dam safety, Taluk Tahsildars, DTPC, SEOC,KSEB

·         24 Hours emergency control room has started functioning in all district Collectorate ,Regularly monitored by  District Collector and Deputy Collector (DM)

·         Cochin International Airport is closed till Sunday – 3PM.
