Situation Update

6th August 2010

·         At least 100 people are feared dead after flash floods in the Leh district of the Ladakh region with many more reported missing.

·         The worst affected areas include Leh town, Skamapari and Choglumsar areas of Leh district.

·         The flooding followed a cloudburst in the area, late on Thursday night.

·         Road and communications infrastructure in the area has been affected and the main civil hospital in Leh – SNM Hospital was also flooded.

·         Sphere India member agency, Save the Children – India, is currently working in the area and is in the process of carrying out assessments. According to their initial findings, the immediate needs include blankets, shelter, household utility kits and basic hygiene material.

 

Sphere India is currently monitoring the situation and will issue a Situation Report as soon as additional information is available.
