Severe Cyclonic Storm JAL
6 November 2010, 20:00 hours
As per the latest information available through the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the severe cyclonic storm ‘JAL’ was centred 550km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu) and 700km southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh).
As a precautionary measure, the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh has instructed the respective district administrations to begin evacuation of people from 35 Mandals in four coastal districts (Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Chittoor) of the state.
Forecast:
· It is expected to intensify further and move in a west-northwest direction and make landfall along the north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts by the night of 7th November 2010.
· Under the influence of the severe cyclonic storm Jal, rain and thundershowers are expected to occur over north coastal Tamil Nadu and south coastal Andhra Pradesh, with heavy to very heavy showers at a few places as the system progresses.
· Gale wind speed reaching 60-70 kmph gusting to 80kmph are expected across north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh from today night. These are expected to intensify and may reach 120-130 kmph gusting to 140 kmph when the system makes landfall.
· Storm surges may inundate low lying areas in the districts of Nellore and Prakasam in Andhra Pradesh and Tiruvallur, Chennai and Kanchipuram districts of Tamil Nadu at the time of landfall.
States likely to be affected:
South coastal Andhra Pradesh and north coastal Tamil Nadu are likely to be affected by the weather system.
Warnings:
Extensive damage to thatched roofs and huts is expected. Disruption of power and communication lines due to uprooting of trees as well as flooding in some parts is expected.
The Inter-Agency Groups (IAGs) in the respective states, as well as Sphere India will continue to monitor the situation and issue periodic updates whenever required.
