Premium Vegetable-Tanned Goatskin

Thickness: 0.7-0.9 mm

Size: 5-8 ft/each

In the world of bookbinding, the integrity of the material is crucial. While some may settle for skiving thicker, often chrome-tanned cowhides, this process can compromise the strength and durability of the leather.

Our solution? A meticulously crafted, vegetable-tanned goatskin designed specifically for bookbinding. Rather than being processed from thicker cowhide, this goatskin is prepared to the optimal thickness without any compromise in its robustness.

Experience the difference of our goatskin. We eagerly await your feedback and hope it elevates your craft.

Roma Goat

Our Roma Goat leather possesses unique qualities that distinguish it from others. Sourced from the finest global goatskin selection by Steve Siegel himself, this leather exudes a rare blend of excellence and charm. The production process begins with an initial tanning using Tara at its original location. The leather is then shipped to a distinguished tanner/finisher in the EU, where it is meticulously re-tanned in Sumac and finished with a delicate pigment coat.

While this leather easily passes the dry rub test, it intentionally falls short in a wet rub test – a design choice intended to enhance its water-absorption capabilities. This feature makes it suitable for sophisticated tooling with gold leaf and albumen. The shrinking process of the grain brings out a pebbly texture, adding to the allure of its surface.

The Roma Goat skins are typically clean, measuring an average of 6-8 square feet, and having a substance thickness of 0.7-0.9mm.

Roma Goat has some unusual characteristics. It starts with goatskins, purchased in the hair. The leather is initially tanned/put into the crust in the same locale. Only skins which are over 1.3 mm in substance and exceed 7 ft in size are accepted. From there, it is shipped to the EU to a tanner/finisher where the leather is re-tanned, the grain is shrunk, decreasing in size by 20% drun dyed and finished without a pigment which would hide any defects in the grain. The leather absorbs water easily and can be tooled with gold leaf and albumen. The grain is shrunk, producing a pebbly surface.

The skins average 6-7 ft/each and are very clean, substance 0.7-0.9 mm.

As this is a new leather, we encourage you to purchase a sample skin rather than ask for a clipping. It is very difficult to tell the properties of the leather from only a swatch. If, for any reason, you are not pleased with the purchase, your money will be refunded and a call tag will be sent for the return. As the skins are shrunk, skins will vary in grain pattern. Shrinkage also causes the leather to be more rectangular than square.

Sulfur Free Calf

Introducing our SF Calf leather – a beacon of sustainable tanning. Crafted with precision and backed by thorough research, this leather avoids all mineral tannins (like chrome and aluminium) and sulfur-infused components. Each piece undergoes rigorous lab testing to confirm its sulfur-free status, with the main tannage leveraging pyrogallic tannins. Preserving the calf’s natural grain and aligning with mid-20th-century archival recommendations, our SF Calf leather promises unmatched longevity, especially when compared to other vegetable-tanned counterparts that employ sulfur-based compounds. We are pioneers, being the first to master the complex production of this sustainable leather.
