Seasonal Leathers

.5 mm Vegetable Goat (6 colors)

For your convenience, skins are already pared to .5 mm. This represents a cost-saving to many people as the leather will not need to be further pared.

THIS LEATHER IS DIRT CHEAP

Tanned to close to .5 mm, then shaved to substance to retain strength. (For example, leather which has been tanned to 1.0 mm then skived, shaved or pared to .5 mm will lose MORE THAN 75% of its tear and flex strength).

This leather is vegetable tanned (it does not contain chrome, as we are a trustworthy source of leather). There are no mechanical modifications made to the grain such as boarding, plating, glazing, etc.

Suggested for bindings, labels, linings, etc.

The average size is 45 sq dm. (5.0 sq ft), for TR grade, 40 sq dm (4.5 sq ft) for LS grade. Skins range in size from 35-75 sq dm. There is no selection for size. We will try to ship you an assortment of skins which average around 45-55 sq dm.

TR Grade: Table Run

LS Grade: For labels and spines, badly misshapen skins,

This is a new product, that just arrived as of 9/14/22. In looking through the leather, many of the skins are misshapen, not square. Should this change, we will update this description.

$49/skin - (1 skin) - $39/skin (2 or more any combination)

Capra Granulosa – New (6 colors)

Introducing our newest Capra Granulosa Premium Leather, a product of meticulous craftsmanship and exceptional quality. This leather is derived from the same raw material as our esteemed SHG, and its allure lies in its naturally obtained, grainy character achieved by a specialized shrinking process during tanning. This leather prides itself on its authentic appeal; there are no artificial graining techniques used to conceal grain defects like plating or embossing.

This is the same recipe as our original CG.  The chemicals are identical from the same Italian chemical house. The mechanicals have been slightly modified to give a more distinct grain.  (mechanicals refer to the mechanical operations in the tanning process, such as drying, toggling, and so forth

Our Capra Granulosa leather undergoes a shrinking process in the tanning phase that enhances the richness of its “heavy” grain. This process results in a 25% reduction in surface area, marking an increase in production costs, which only underlines its superior quality.

This premium leather is drum-dyed, topped with a light cover coat but without the use of pigment to cover grain defects. The excellent water absorption quality of this leather guarantees great results in blind tooling.

We recommend Capra Granulosa for fine bindings.

Given that only the highest-grade vegetable goatskin can result in this type of leather, our pricing remains incredibly reasonable. Special colors are available upon request.

Indulge in the elegance of natural grain with Capra Granulosa Premium Leather.

Quick Note on Supply - Many of you have read of safety issues in Nigeria. We have had to deal with these for many years. We have our own staff in Sokoto, Nigeria, so we have no problems with supply of best grades. People who do not purchase from Sokoto may have supply issues as, what is claimed to be this leather is sold through third parties in Kano.

If you have seen SokotoTM leather from elsewhere, it is not the same leather which we are offering. We are trusted worldwide for this product

Introducing Siegel’s Sokoto™ Traditional Premium Leather, the pinnacle of authenticity and craftsmanship in leather production. Crafted in partnership with Chemist LLC, our Sokoto™ range, including Sokoto™ Morocco, Sokoto™ Traditional, and NTND, is all proudly produced in cooperatives in Sokoto™, Nigeria. Our process is one of community and sustainability; from every production, we set aside funds for local charities. We exclusively use natural biologicals in our production process, maintaining the purity and authenticity of these genuine Sokoto™ skins.

In an industry often confused with imitations, we stand by the authenticity of our product. Numerous competitors resort to using Indian goat skins, or, even African skins which are embossed and tumbled, and, perhaps, using pigments or “frowned upon” retanning agents to hide defects to imitate the rich grain pattern of Nigerian skins. While the industry lacks clear definitions, this method is widely considered as producing ‘imitation’ leather. If it’s imitation you’re looking for, you might need to look elsewhere.

Historically, Sokoto™ goat has held the prime spot as the highest quality vegetable-tanned goat available, as endorsed by the Report of the Committee on Leather for Bookbinding, Royal Society of Arts, London, 1905. Originating from Nigeria, a region in political turmoil, these skins have become extremely difficult to acquire, leading to the prevalence of manipulated grain imitations in the market.

More about our Sokoto™ Goatskins:

The raw stock is handpicked from Sokoto™ and pre-tanned in bagaruwa, a substance derived from the seed pods of the Acacia Arabica tree, before being transported to the EU for coloring and over-tanning.

Our skins average 6.00-6.50 ft each, with a range from 4.75-9.00+ sq ft each, and a substance of 0.8-1.0 mm. The leather is priced per skin and is available in different grades. Grade #1/#2 is ideal for full bindings, while Grade #3 is perfect for three-quarter bindings. Downgrades are primarily due to discoloration, seldom for holes. For current pricing details, please contact us.

With its high-quality, Sokoto™ Traditional Premium Leather also finds its use in crafting fine small leather goods. Choose Siegel’s Sokoto™ Traditional for a touch of history, authenticity, and unparalleled quality.
