CALL FOR HELP: 2015 South Philly Garden Tour

Hi Committee Members,
I'm sending this along on behalf of Stephanie Zbikowski who is spearheading garden recruitment for this year's Garden Tour. (Apologies if you've already received this from Steph directly) 

As the biggest annual event and fundraiser for the Co-op, we truly rely on full participation to maximize success!  That said, please read below and forward the information widely.

Dear committee members - 

We're working hard to recruit gardens for this year's tour. As of now, we have about 8, possibly 10. The gardens are primarily businesses and community gardens (aka public spaces). We really feel like we need private spaces in order to add value (otherwise, people could see most of these places on their own). Our goal is 20 spaces total by 8/1. 

This is where we need your help recruiting! Cut/pasted below is an email that's ready to send out to your friends and neighbors. Feel free to personalize, just be careful when forwarding. 

Please forward it along! Recruitment typically is most successful when it comes from a familiar person. Copy me on the email (gar...@soutphillyfoodcoop.org) and I'll follow-up with them a week later (if needed). Please don't send me addresses or intersections, as this is the most difficult group to target (and we already have plenty).  

Also, if you live in the catchment area (Broad to 24th, South to Snyder), please consider nominating your own garden!

Hello Neighbor!

Do you have a cool garden, backyard space, beautiful flower boxes or share a plot growing some ripe tomatoes in a community garden space? Then you can help us support the South Philly Food Co-op’s 5^th Annual Garden Tour.

The South Philly Food Co-op is a growing group of local residents who are committed to bringing a member-owned grocery store that carries local, high-quality foods at a fair price to our neighborhood. 

Each September, we host a self-guided garden tour highlighting community, public and private gardens – to connect neighbors, groups, and businesses and raise funds to support our mission. 

This year’s event will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 1:00 - 4:00 PM starting at Julian Abele Park. We will tour Graduate Hospital, Point Breeze, Newbold and West Passyunk (general boundaries are Broad to 23^rd streets, from South to Snyder) and hope to have close to 20 gardens for tour takers to visit.

Please consider joining our tour as either a household or community group. The requirements are minimal, and include 1) a garden 2) a garden host for the event duration.

I posted it on the Newbold Neighbhor FB yesterday. I also sent out about 15 personal asks of folks in the area. I've been super slammed with births and appointments but hope to do some more personal outreach in the neighbhorhood soon.

Sounds like we have a lot of public places but was also goign to reach out to Aquinas Center unless they are already on board?

Great.  I'd say SOSNA, South Broad, and any of the Point Breeze associations, too.  Maybe churches as well since a lot of folks in that community are active with their church but not necessarily with their civic.  We should have these contacts thanks to all our membership/speaker series outreach.

I've reached out to a number of the Point Breeze groups and key players. A word of a caution when communicating with Point Breeze residents and community leaders.....our Garden Tour form letter includes the name Newbold which is a serious point of contention on this side of town.
