What is causing the background to change on these characters?

Confused, can't figure out why random characters are getting the background changed, is there some sort of spell checker in spf13 by default? 

These aren't being highlighted by syntax, I checked, but can't figure out which included plugin is causing misspelled words to have red background

Nevermind.  Just commented out "set spell on"

that's kind of a weird default for a programming set-up.
