Dear Colleagues,
October brings two important UN observances: the International Day of the Girl Child on 11 October and White Cane Day on 15 October.
Please find below and attached ICEVI’s message for the first of these special days. A suggested social media post is included at the end of the message. I will share the White Cane Day message with you in a separate email.
Thank you for helping us spread the word by sharing these messages with your networks.
UN International Day of the Girl Child (11 October 2025)
On 11 October, the International Council for Education of People with Visual Impairment (ICEVI) joins the global community in marking the UN International Day of the Girl Child. This day draws attention to the rights of girls worldwide, highlighting the importance of ensuring equal access to education, health, and opportunities for every girl, including those with blindness, deafblindness, and low vision.
ICEVI is proud to have dedicated the July 2025 issue of The Educator to the theme of The Girl Child. This issue showcases research, reflections, and practical initiatives from around the world that promote the empowerment and inclusion of girls with visual impairment in education and society.
The issue is available on the ICEVI website in English, French, and Spanish, and will soon also be offered as a Braille file, further supporting our commitment to accessible knowledge-sharing.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, ICEVI reaffirms its commitment to advancing the rights of girls with visual impairment and other disabilities and to amplifying their voices, stories, and achievements.
