Negativism: Joe often complained that his math teacher was unfair, or
that the class was too hard. However, he rejected every suggestion
his mother made to improve his grade and insisted that he was probably
just bad at math anyway.
Compartmentalization: At school, Mitch would always shove Robby into
lockers. In the afternoons, however, once he was away from school, he
could often be seen volunteering at the local animal shelter, feeding
puppies and kittens.
Introjection: Ginny became so attached to Tom's diary that his
opinions became almost indistinguishable from her own.
Sublimation: After getting an F on a test, Jenny decided to go on a
run, reminding herself that grades were not the only part of a healthy
lifestyle - physical fitness was also important.
(Plain) Rationalization: Helen went to Costa Rica over break, and
before she went, she was telling all her friends that it was a service
trip. In reality, she was only going to spend one day of the vacation
volunteering, and she was actually just excited to relax on the
beautiful beaches.
