When you first you run Windows Live Mail, the "Add an E-mail Account" dialog automatically opens. If it doesn't appear, or if you already have setup email accounts aside from Gmail, locate the "Add an e-mail account" button in Windows Live Mail's left pane; click this button to open the email account wizard:
Under "E-mail address", type your full Gmail email address in the format yourUs...@gmail.com. Enter your Gmail password in the second field. By default, Windows Live Mail will remember your Gmail password; you can uncheck the "Remember password" checkbox.
The last field ("Display Name") determines how emails you send appear to recipients (in their "From" field). The display name can be anything, and doesn't have to match your Gmail email address; your choice of display name doesn't affect your Gmail account itself, only emails you send through Gmail from Windows Live Mail.
Check the "Manually configure server settings for e-mail account" checkbox if you want to manually setup Gmail in Windows Live Mail. Because Gmail is a popular email provider, Windows Live Mail knows how to automatically set it up for you.
Click Next: if you chose to let Windows Live Mail configure your Gmail account for you, you can skip the next three steps. Windows Live Mail has automatically configured Gmail for you:
If Windows Live Mail didn't give you this confirmation, it either means that your Gmail password was incorrect, that your Gmail email address has a typo, or that your Internet connection was faulty. Otherwise, your are ready to use your Gmail account in Windows Live Mail.
As soon as your Gmail account information is downloaded in Windows Live Mail, you will see your Gmail folders displayed in the left pane. Note that the usual Gmail folders ("All Mail", "Drafts", "Sent Mail", "Spam", "Starred", and "Trash") are all visible by expanding the [Gmail] subfolder in Windows Live Mail.

I -never- had this problem when I had Outlook setup with Gmail IMAP. Outlook
worked flawlessly, and it's odd because WLM has very similar settings as
Outlook does and I had them both setup the same way. It seems to have
something to do with the purging of messages every so often. I don't know how
it works...
Thanks for linking to my reply earlier. You can answer to the same questions
I asked and follow the same suggestions I gave to the OP. ; )
Do you have troubleshooting logging for IMAP enabled?
Look at the WindowsLiveMail.log then for more clues
about this error
That's the problem with non-reproducible sporadic symptoms,
you can't describe a test case that needs to be fixed, so you're
unlikely to be able to get a trouble report accepted without it being
"Closed: No Repro". The best thing to do IMO is get more
familiar with your symptoms so you have a better chance of seeing
a pattern in them. If you can do that you have a better chance
of at least being able to devise a workaround and perhaps
even an extreme test case which is reproducible and hence
one which you could then report and have some better hope
of being fixed eventually.

Hi Gans,I'd like to take a look at your log for this problem if I could. To get a
log, do the following:In WLMail, go to Tools->Options->Advanced->Maintenance and check IMAP if it
is not already checked.
Close WLMail.
Delete or rename your current log file. Logs can get pretty large, making
them difficult for you to send and difficult for me to read. Your log file
will be at C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live
Mail\WindowsLiveMail.log in Vista or C:\Documents and Settings\kevbarn\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail\WindowsLiveMail.log in
XP.
Launch WLMail and use it until the error occurs.
Close WLMail and copy the log somewhere such as your desktop.
Email me the log at kevbarn AT microsoft DOT com. Thanks for using WLMail and sorry for the inconvenience.

So this really just means I suspect: we give up and here's a
(perhaps bad) guess about why. ; )Unless you can find an option which requests more detail for your
trace I think you may have to start doing a packet trace to get
more information about your "syntax error". It might be sufficient
to set up Fiddler2 (connecting to the appropriate port) to do this;
otherwise I would try using netcap to do a capture and Ethereal
(aka WireShark) to do the formatting. Ethereal can actually do
both but I find it easier to do it that way.
Good luckRobert

The trace shows the client (me) sending a RST (Reset) as it is trying to get
the ALL MAIL folder. All of the other folders work fine with no errors. i.e.
the headers sync just fine.Dawn"Robert Aldwinckle" wrote:
I am having trouble with WLM imap in a different way. I use Google apps mail
and Gmail (both IMAP) in Windows live mail. Everything works fine except that
whenever a new mail hits my account, it is not automatically pushed to my WLM
client. I have to manually check for mail or as soon as I enter the inbox of
my account, the mail gets delivered. It seems like there is no persistent
connection to my server or maybe I am wrong. I checked out my configuration
in Thunderbird and it works just fine. I tried reinstalling but still no
signs of resolving this issue... Any idea y this might be happening? Thanks Andrew Sam

15-Jan-10I was running into the same exact problem of constant purging or disconnecting when clicking different folders and the annoying popup that won't go away when you try to cancel the purging.I tried a variation of something suggested above, and it seems to have worked for me. I unchecked the "use deleted item folder for IMAP". It is checked by default.
I also already had the purge options unchecked under maintenance. I had timeout all the way up to 5 minutes and didn't matter, but I put it on 2, since someone suggested it above. Anyway, I think the setting that helped was to uncheck use deleted items folder for IMAP. Since then, no problems. I tried Thunderbird, and I actually like the Windows Live format better when writing emails, but this problem was making it completely unusable and I was ready just to use GMAIL's web interface, even though I can't stand not being able to turn off conversations.Previous Posts In This Thread:

I cannot diagnose what is causing this issue. I even upgraded recently to Windows Live Mail 2011 hoping it would resolve the issue but it has not. Were you ever able to resolve this issue? Thanks,
Steve

For example, I only sync messages with my Inbox. I sync headers for Drafts,
Sent Mail, and Starred. No other folders (aka labels) are synced.I've found this link helpful in tweaking Gmail's setup... YMMV "Steve Huie" wrote in message
news:2010111210...@eggheadcafe.com...
The recent update to the Mail App for Windows 10 (Version 16005.12827.20200.0) has caused numerous problems with the Gmail integration. Sent mails are not appearing in the Sent Mail folder - instead they often appear in the Spam folder; attachments on incoming emails are missing.
The best way to work around this is to remove the Gmail account from the Mail app and then re-add it manually via the Other Account POP/IMAP route using the IMAP settings as described in Gmail help: =en
One other thing you may have to do is change a security setting in Google to allow access to less secure apps. Google now considers the Windows Mail App a less secure app and therefore blocks it from doing some tasks. If you are concerned with this and while we wait for Microsoft to sort this out it might be safest to only use Gmail via a browser using mail.google.com
I deleted my gmail account and recreated it using the manual settings described in your prior solution. No difference, sent mail only is populated when emails sent from browser, not the windows 10 mail app.
Just setting up a new Win 10 laptop and activated the Win10 Mail app for my Gmail account. Noticed that it imported all my Gmail folders I had set up, but it failed to populate those folders with any of the messages that were in them
I suggest you open the mail app. Click on the Gmail account and right-click on the account and select account settings. You need to click on mail change mailbox sync settings and make sure that the email sync option is checked.
Thank you for taking the time to reply with a detailed but simple response. You're recommendation is very generic and simple and was attempted various times to simply delete and reinstall the account. Did you even take a sample gmail account and try your own suggestion before posting it as a possible solution to so many?
