Hello All,

My team and I have just received our BlackPearl system and we have a question we can't seem to find the answer to.

Our situation:
We are charged for the data we transfer over a shared network.  Currently, our host server has a direct fibre connection to our tape library so that when we write to tape we are not charged as data is not traveling over the network.

My question:
When we setup BlackPearl and connect our host server to BP via the ethernet port, will we get charged for the data we transfer via the ethernet connection?  If so, is there a way we could avoid these charges?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tiffany,

BlackPearl requires an Ethernet connection to send and receive data, it is then sent to tape via FC or SAS depending on the tape drives connected to it. To help reduce the costs of moving the data over the network to the BlackPearl before it sends it off to tape, can you move BlackPearl closer to the server that moves the data? If you can, you can connect the BlackPearl to the server via a cross over cable, this would mean that no data needs to transfer over the network. You would then just need to make sure that the connection from the BlackPearl to the tape library is able to span that new distance
