I installed Specto and created 2 watches. One for a gmail account, and
one for a website. Both have changed since then but I have not
received any notifications. There are no errors in the error log.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that I eliminated
the top panel on the desktop (Ubuntu 9.04) I did this long before
installing Specto. Would this somehow prevent Specto from functioning?
Its logs indicate that it is doing its tasks, but I don't see the
notifications.

Hi, what version is this, specto 0.2.x or 0.3.x?
And yeah, if you deleted your top panel, that means you also deleted the "notification area" applet; re-add it to your panel applets, I'm guessing that's your problem.

Its version 0.2.2. I added the notifcation area to the lower panel. I
haven't seen any notifications yet. The pages have changed.

Please use the 0.3.x version available in recent ubuntu releases or our PPA, the 0.2.x series are way too old and buggy.

Thanks for replying. Do I need a newer (9.10) version of Ubuntu to use 0.3.x?  I've never used a PPA and I don't know what that is.

Well yes, if you can use Ubuntu 9.10 (or 10.04 when it comes out) it would be the 0.3.1 version of specto. Otherwise, a PPA is simply a special, third-party repository. We have two, see http://specto.sourceforge.net/?go=download

SOLVED: Specto is now working great. As your advice, I added the "notifcations area" applet to my lower panel (Ubuntu 9.04), and used the PPA to upgrade to Specto 0.3.1  Thanks.
