I have had Specto running on my Ubuntu/Gnome system for some time,
however at some point it's panel icon and hence any access to
configuration/setup has disappeared. I have tried reinstalling Specto
and also deleted my ~/.specto/ directory, but nothing has worked to
reinstate the UI.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Run specto from the terminal and send us the output :)

I doubt it's a tray icon logic error (because I remember my logic being perfect back then :P), but in the event that running specto from a terminal outputs no error/traceback and it still doesn't work, you may want to check the actual *settings*, which are stored in gconf. You can access them using gconf-editor. In particular you may be interested by:
/apps/specto/always_show_icon
/apps/specto/debug_mode
/apps/specto/show_in_windowlist
/apps/specto/show_notifier

Thanks, I read the same suggestion in another thread so I tried that,
unfortunately there is no output.

Have you tried my suggestion of editing the settings through gconf-editor?

Hi Jeff, yes thanks, I was not aware of the gconf-editor, most useful.
I checked all the Specto settings you mentioned, however they were all
already ticked. However I did try one setting related to open notifier
window, and when I restarted Specto it's main window with the watch
list came up. So that is a partial solution. Why it does not show it's
panel icon is still a mystery.

cheers Denis

The setting are all set to true? In any case, if you want to reset all settings (that may fix your problem), you can run this command:

gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/specto/

Tried this but it has not made any apparent difference.

I'm not sure what I have done, perhaps I did something silly and
removed it from the main panel inadvertently. I don't want to waste
your time any further. At least when I use gconf-editor and set the
'show-notifier' to true, when specto starts it shows the watch list
and I can interact with it.

Well, maybe you removed the "notification area" applet from the panel (if no other apps show icons there, that may be an indicator).

Indeed that was exactly the problem, I feel embarrassed but I have
learned something. I apologize for wasting your time. Many thanks for
your time and persistence.
