I was primarily working as a food stylist at that time and quickly found the limited but carefully curated selection of goods sold at Todaro Bros. to be invaluable. They had perfect bunches of mint with tiny leaves, gorgeous heads of curly green leaf lettuce, always-ripe avocados, and a house-made fresh mozzarella that I regularly dreamt about. Needless to say, I was a big fan of the store, and I could tell the rest of the neighborhood was, too.
So when I found out a new Fairway Market was opening directly across the street from Todaro Bros., I was both breathless with excitement (Wacky produce! More than one kind of peanut butter to choose from!) and full of fear. What would happen to Todaro Bros.? How would they compete with a Goliath supermarket across the street?
That was in 2012, and so far, Todaro Bros. has survived. I sat down with Peter Todaro, the third-generation owner/operator of the family-run business, to talk about how the store has evolved over the years, what he's done to keep the business thriving, and where he hopes to take the small, family-run grocery store in the future.
My grandfather, Pellegrino, started this business with his two older brothers, Giuseppe and Paolo. They moved to New York City from Sicily and opened a small Italian grocery/convenience store in 1917 to cater to the Italian immigrants in the neighborhood. We've been in the area for such a long time that I feel like we are part of the makeup of the neighborhood, even though the neighborhood's changing.
Something that we try to do is really give a feeling of community as much as we can. I feel that is really important now, especially since the neighborhood is changing so much and a lot of the smaller mom and pop shops are just not making it.
I would say prepared foods are a significant factor of our business now. It evolved in the mid-to-late '80s, as people's shopping behaviors became a little different. It started with more of the partially-prepared items, which you'll still see today, like marinated meats ready to be cooked. But then we started making things like a mozzarella Caprese salad and noticed that a lot of those things were selling. Little by little, my father started to build out the kitchen.
We have a very, very good reputation for our tuna fish salad, which is kind of funny because we're an Italian deli. The story that my mother always likes to tell is that when she was at NYU hospital giving birth to my older brother, all the nurses were asking for the recipe. She said, "A couple things: One, now is really not the most appropriate time to be asking about the tuna fish salad. And two, we can't give away that recipe."
When Fairway opened up in the neighborhood, it was evident that the shopping landscape in New York City was changing. One thing I asked myself was: How can we preserve the history and the community we've built in our store while still adapting to the times and staying relevant? That's how we decided to open the Enoteca, [a 27-seat wine bar within the grocery store]. It was something that I wanted to do anyway. I wanted to take the business and make it feel very European in a sense. In Europe, people have been eating in stores for a long time. Opening the wine bar definitely helped bolster that sense of community.
Opening the Enoteca was a logical move for to us showcase some of the foods and cheeses and meats we were selling. I'll never forget when a customer picked up a jar of balsamic onion jam and said, "This sounds really interesting, but I don't even know what to do with it, and quite honestly, I'm not sure if I want to spend six dollars on something that I'm not too familiar with." So we created a crostini with Camembert and that balsamic onion jam, and it's one of our most popular dishes. The Enoteca gives customers an opportunity to taste some of the products we carry, and if they like them, they can purchase them on their way out. That's kind of how we've evolved.
I stand 100% behind the decision to open the Enoteca. It's brought people into the store who wouldn't necessarily come in because it's a nice, warm and inviting space. We have a wine and beer license; my father and I have tasted every single wine that's on that menu. We never really wanted to get into liquor. We just wanted a nice, casual environment, where people can eat some great small plates and enjoy a glass of wine.
As far as the future of Todaro Bros. goes, I think we'll definitely stay in this location. I joined the family business because I wanted to get involved with some entrepreneurial things, so right now one of my focuses with the store has been to build out some catering. I've recently set up a couple of booths in the outdoor markets where we're going to be focusing on Italian sandwiches. That's where I see the future: just seeing where the opportunities are, being very perceptive of the changes in the industry, and making the modifications. If that means some satellite operations, if that means focusing on a couple different directions in the space here, that's what we're going to do. But we'll always stay true to what people think of when they think of the Todaro Bros. brand.

Aldo and Antonio, both native Italians, raised with a love of fine food, have been in food service for more than 30 years. They genuinely care about their customers, which is why so many become regulars and return week after week.
Video shows four boys targeted the store and its customers, two of them hurling eggs from across the street at the store. Then it happened a third day. In one incident, they reportedly injected red dye into the eggs before throwing them at a fellow student. The boys allegedly stole the eggs from other stores on the block.
Swanson Middle School's principal, Bridget Loft, sent out a notice to parents that says in part: "We continue to remind students that this behavior is inappropriate and is contrary to what they have been learning in school and to Swanson values."
Swanson Middle School Principal Bridget Loft's statement says in full: "Swanson and the Italian Store are working together to continue to allow students to enter the store without requiring an adult chaperone. The Swanson Special, however, will remain off the menu until further notice. We continue to remind students that this behavior is inappropriate and is contrary to what they have been learning in school and to Swanson values. We are asking parents to talk with their child about the importance of practicing responsibility, empathy and self-control while visiting Westover. We hope that the Italian Store will eventually return the Swanson Special to its menu."
