Kids in the seventies and eighties(punks) hated the self-absorbed nature of the baby boom generation. Diamond Dogs is a brilliant album. It has nothing to do with baby boomers just George Orwell mostly. Fripp from King Crimson is a brilliant musician. Way too ideosyncratic to affect Hall & Oates.

Other compilations have longer track lists and go farther back into their career, but no Hall and Oates greatest-hits collection surpasses Rock 'n Soul Part 1. Originally released at the height of the duo's career in fall 1983, the 12-song set functions as a time machine back into an era when Daryl Hall and John Oates dominated the charts with songs that have long since become standards. While a majority of the anthology draws from the group's trio of mammoth RCA albums spanning 1980 through 1982, it also includes the pair's only three Top 10 smashes from the 1970s: "Sara Smile," "She's Gone," and the chart-topping "Rich Girl." One-stop shopping for the absolute best of Hall and Oates doesn't come any easier.

Mastered from the original master tapes and pressed on 180g LP at RTI, this reissue presents nine Top 10 Hall and Oates singles with awe-inspiring detail and palpable realism. Lifelike tones grace the array of guitars, pianos, basses, and voices placed against synthesized backdrops. Each member's singing claims enhanced intimacy and balance. The collective harmonies sound sharper, the dynamics richer, and the soundstages wider and deeper. While the tandem's peers often relied on robotic mechanisms and now-dated keyboard devices, Hall and Oates wisely merge the period's savvy styles with tried-and-true soulful instrumentation.

This ultimate collection of Hall & Oates greatest hits includes all the classics like "Maneater", "Rich Girl", "Private Eyes", "You Make My Dreams (Come True)", "Kiss On My List", "Sara Smile", "Out of Touch," and "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)". This 2001 collection also features their cover Mike Oldfield's "Family Man".

My dad was always keen to introduce me to music wherever possible and by that age I was already very keen and open to music, especially when having the visual aspect there in front of me, and in particular the spectacle of a band playing in the live environment. He decided to show me this concert after it was televised not long after the event and I have had a love affair with it ever since and still have the VHS to this day.

Sadly this concert has yet to be issued on DVD/Blu-Ray despite a rather huge demand for it. One day it may happen and when it does I hope the songs that were left out of the the TV broadcast are also included, but the 10 songs that were televised are on Youtube (some of which embeded on this blog) and if you like what you hear, a download of the audio is available from -listening-hall-and-oates-the-liberty-concert-1985/ .

If you are a fan of Sad Cafe then I wrote a substantial piece on them last year that may well interest you. It is a retrospective look at their career as well as charting my dads involvement with them and the effect they had on me in my youth much like this concert did. You can find it here -i-love-sad-cafe/

Incidently some of the remaining members have reformed the band and are heading out of a mini tour of the UK in November with a view to doing more next year. All the info on that can be found on their official site

They are the best-selling duo in pop music history with nearly 30 Top 40 hits to their credit, yet Hall & Oates have always taken a dignified approach to stardom. Though they could rightfully promote themselves as pop royalty, singer/songwriters Darryl Hall and John Oates have eschewed pomposity, instead focusing their formidable energies towards creating superlative songs.

From their emergence in the early '70s to their most recent 2002 hit "Do It For Love," Hall & Oates have made a career of beating the odds. They started out as white purveyors of Philadelphia soul, a competitive situation that made them musical long-shots. Thanks to their uncanny hitmaking instincts, the duo went on to become an inescapable radio presence during the '70s and '80s. They kept a low profile during the '90s, but when the group was profiled on VH1's "Behind the Music" rockumentary series in 2002, it resulted in a greatest hits compilation featuring a new Hall & Oates track, "Do It for Love." The single, the duo's first studio recording in six years, crept to the top of the adult contemporary charts.

Responding to that unambiguous sign from fans and radio listeners, Hall & Oates repaired to the studio to create an album celebrating their pop and r&b roots. Named after the single that fueled their return, Do It For Love finds Hall & Oates churning out their signature sweet melodies, clever lyrics and deep-felt vocals on songs like "Miss DJ" and the winsome "Forever For You." On their magnificent cover of New Radical's "Someday We'll Know," the duo reunites with Todd Rundgren, producer of Hall & Oates hit '70s album, War Babies.

Introduced while attending Philadelphia's Temple University, Darryl Hall and John Oates were established professional musicians when they met in the mid-'60s. Starting out as a folk-soul act, the duo secured a recording contract with Atlantic Records and almost immediately made their presence felt. Solidifying their credibility as r&b songwriters, Hall & Oates' 1973 tune, "She's Gone," was covered by soul legend Lou Rawls and the funk-pop quintet Tavares, among others.

Moving to RCA Records in 1975, the duo heralded their arrival by starting a seemingly endless hit streak. Starting with their 1976 single "Sara Smile," Hall & Oates fired off smash after smash, including "Rich Girl," "It's A Laugh," "Kiss on My List," "Private Eyes," "I Can't Go for That," "Maneater" and countless others.

During the hitmaking streak, Darryl Hall established himself as one of pop's most expressive and versatile vocalists. The lanky singer won praise from a wide range of respected artists, collaborating or performing with former Temptations David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks, Elvis Costello and King Crimson conceptualist Robert Fripp. Not to be outdone, John Oates has demonstrated impressive vocal prowess on tracks like "She's Gone" and the contemplative new tune "Someday We'll Know."

A judge sided with Daryl Hall in a court hearing Nov. 30, extending an existing restraining order which temporarily blocks fellow Hall & Oates band member John Oates from selling his share of the duo's joint venture to Primary Wave, a private music publishing and talent management company.

The decision followed a hearing Thursday morning at Davidson County Chancery Court in Nashville, Tennessee, during which lawyers for Hall and Oates clashed over whether Hall was entitled to the extended restraining order blocking Oates' deal.

Hall's counsel argued that the court order should be issued to put the sale on hold until a private arbitrator can hear the case and decide whether Oates was legally allowed to sell his stake to Primary Wave.

On the other side, Oates' attorneys said they believed that the case should play out in arbitration and that Hall is \"not entitled to any relief at all.\" At most, Oates' attorneys conceded, the judge should extend the restraining order by only a few weeks.

Perkins noted that Hall could face \"irreparable harm\" if Oates' sale to Primary Wave -- which has purchased the catalogs of several prominent artists, including Kurt Cobain, Chicago, Def Leppard and more -- moves forward before Hall is able to prove it violates terms of their partnership deal.

\"The proposed transfer by Defendants is still pending,\" Perkins wrote in his decision. \"If the transfer goes forward before the arbitrator has an opportunity to consider and rule upon Plaintiffs' application for interim injunctive relief in the arbitration, then it could, as a practical matter, render much of the relief Plaintiffs are seeking in the arbitration ineffectual.\"

Details of the duo's private business agreements and Oates' attempted sale to Primary Wave have mostly been kept under wraps, and it is unclear exactly what is at stake in the litigation, as previous court documents have thus far been sealed.

Hall first filed court documents on Nov. 16 seeking \"emergency injunctive relief in aid of an arbitration\" in the matter of Oates' alleged deal with Primary Wave, which Hall claims is \"an indisputable breach of contract.

\"The temporary injunctive relief sought herein is in aid of the arbitration so that the status quo of the partnership may be maintained, and the claims may be considered in the arbitration by the arbitrator in due course on the merits before irreparable damage is done by a closing of the Unauthorized Transaction,\" the court filing reads.

Hall filed a temporary restraining order against Oates on Nov. 16 as a means to \"expedite proceedings\" in the matter. The order, which states in part that Oates \"shall take no actions related to or in furtherance of closing the proposed transaction with Primary Wave,\" was granted on the same day.
