The sounds of the Sun are on display at the NASA Goddard Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. An immersive art installation, called Solarium, uses vivid imagery and sonification to transport listeners to the heart of our solar system.

The Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division supports NPS units system-wide by providing: scientific leadership to advance understanding and stewardship of natural sounds and night skies; highly specialized technical assistance; and development of policy and guidance to facilitate internal capacity building. First Sounds pioneered the playback of the oldest sound recordings in 2007 and has been in the forefront ever since.
Sound recordings made before the invention of the phonograph were not intended to be played back. Extracting their sounds remains our specialty.

Stressed plants show altered phenotypes, including changes in color, smell, and shape. Yet, airborne sounds emitted by stressed plants have not been investigated before. Here we show that stressed plants emit airborne sounds that can be recorded from a distance and classified. We recorded ultrasonic sounds emitted by tomato and tobacco plants inside an acoustic chamber, and in a greenhouse, while monitoring the plant's physiological parameters. We developed machine learning models that succeeded in identifying the condition of the plants, including dehydration level and injury, based solely on the emitted sounds. These informative sounds may also be detectable by other organisms. This work opens avenues for understanding plants and their interactions with the environment and may have significant impact on agriculture.

Tinnitus is commonly described as a ringing sound, but some people hear other types of sounds, such as roaring or buzzing. Tinnitus is common, with surveys estimating that 10 to 25% of adults have it. Children can also have tinnitus. For children and adults, tinnitus may improve or even go away over time, but in some cases, it worsens with time. When tinnitus lasts for three months or longer, it is considered chronic.

The symptoms of tinnitus can vary significantly from person to person. You may hear phantom sounds in one ear, in both ears, and in your head. The phantom sound may ring, buzz, roar, whistle, hum, click, hiss, or squeal. The sound may be soft or loud and may be low or high pitched. It may come and go or be present all the time. Sometimes, moving your head, neck, or eyes, or touching certain parts of your body may produce tinnitus symptoms or temporarily change the quality of the perceived sound. This is called somatosensory (pronounced so-ma-toe-SENSE-uh-ree) tinnitus.

Most cases of tinnitus are subjective, meaning that only you can hear the sounds. In rare cases, the sound pulsates rhythmically, often in time to your heartbeat. In these cases, a doctor may be able to hear the sounds with a stethoscope and, if so, it is considered to be objective tinnitus. Often, objective tinnitus has an identifiable cause and is treatable.

One leading theory is that tinnitus can occur when damage to the inner ear changes the signal carried by nerves to the parts of your brain that process sound. A way to think about this is that while tinnitus may seem to occur in your ear, the phantom sounds are instead generated by your brain, in an area called the auditory cortex.

Next, you may be referred to an otolaryngologist (commonly called an ear, nose, and throat doctor, or an ENT). The ENT will ask you to describe the tinnitus sounds and when they started, and will examine your head, neck, and ears. You might also be referred to an audiologist, who can measure your hearing and evaluate your tinnitus.

In the past two decades, scientists and amateurs have begun using digital recorders to record the sounds of life from the Arctic to the Amazon. Much of what they record is inaudible to humans, above or below our hearing range. The science of digital bioacoustics can thus be compared to the early days of optics: Digital recorders, like microscopes or telescopes, extend the human sense of hearing beyond the perceptual limits of our bodies.

Even some voiceless creatures, it turns out, are exquisitely attuned to sound. Steve Simpson, a biologist at the University of Exeter, has demonstrated that coral larvae are able to differentiate between the sounds of healthy and degraded reefs (they prefer the former), and even between a random reef and their home reef (they prefer the latter). Yossi Yovel, a neuro-ecologist at the University of Tel Aviv, has found that flowers will respond to the sound of buzzing bees by flooding themselves with more and sweeter nectar within minutes. Even animals in the soil make noises: an underground Twitter.

The benefits go beyond the ability to detect small signs that might otherwise be overlooked. Our field of vision is limited to approximately 180 degrees, and the eyes can close. But we can hear sounds from 360 degrees, and the ears are always listening. Visual data requires the attentive gaze of a healthcare provider. But audio data can be projected, calling for rapid attention. Sonification is both subtle and insistently immediate.

-->Catalog of Earthquake-Related SoundsCompiled by Karl V. SteinbruggeThis collection of 21 earthquake-related sounds, prepared by Karl V. Steinbrugge, was originally published in BSSA vol. 64, no. 5 in 1974 and updated with eight additional sounds in 1985. The collection was sold by the Society for many years, first as an audio cassette tape and later as a compact disc. SSA is now making it available for free in the form of digital audio files in MP3 format.

Commentary: A telephone conversation was being recorded in an outdoor telephone booth in downtown San Francisco when the earthquake occurred. The telephone and the recording equipment remained operational during the earthquake. Prior to the event, street noises, such as the movement of heavy trucks and buses, can be heard. The recorded voices and sounds are those within the phone booth as well as those from the other end of the line; the other end was located perhaps 3 to 5 miles westerly of the downtown recording location and also was possibly that much closer to the earthquake.

Commentary: A recording session was in progress at a recording studio when the earthquake occurred. Although the technician left, power did not fail and the equipment continued to operate. The rerecorded music has the earthquake sounds superimposed on it.

Commentary: No earthquake sounds are present, and only the duration of the shaking (11 seconds plus) can be detected because the recording was a direct electronic transcription from a long-playing disc to a tape recorder. No outside noise was picked up except for turntable tone-arm vibrations.

Commentary: The recording was made with the recorder on the floor of a frame dwelling. The microphone was on a small table along with a radio receiver tuned to the local police frequency. A standard broadcast radio was operating approximately 6 feet from the microphone. Family sounds are heard immediately after the recording of the 11:20 p.m. shock.
