Translating SpeakGoodChinese into your language

The language specific parts of the SpeakGoodChinese user interface (UI) are all separated from the code. There are only a few minor places where English language Praat messages might show.

The buttons, short help messages, and feed-back texts are collected in language specific tables. The names of these tables end in _<Language Code>. The Language Code is a two or three character code from the official ISO 639 code table:

The language code for Chinese is ZH, that for English is EN. Use a two character code if you can. Stick to these codes!

Translating SpeakGoodChinese to a new language is done by translating a full set of these tables. Internally, tab-separated-values (.tsv) tables are used. But for the translations, spreadsheet tables are easier to handle. Even partial translations are valuable.

When translating, start with the Config and MainPage tables. Translate the columns headed by Text and Helptext (but not these two column headers).

It is not necessary to translate the Credits page, unless you want to add your name as the translator.

A set of translated tables can be added to a running SpeakGoodChinese instance for evaluation or local application. Instructions on how to do that can be found in the SpeakGoodChinese Translation Guide.
