The situation is thus: the web part is installed and working for the
site collection admin, but when any other user looks at the page with
this web part installed, they get an access denied message. I've
checked that all the js files are retrievable by these users - where
else should I look / begin troubleshooting?

it was installed by running:

stsadm -o deploysolution -name “spelements.spslideshow.wsp” -local -
allowGacDeployment -url http://dev
stsadm -o activatefeature -id f4c52093-35ce-43d4-990d-05d85eb57ab6 -
url http://dev

ps: thanks v much for your contribution.

I have just verified again that SPSlideShow (latest version 0.7b2, but
I don't think it changed anything important since 0.6) works if the
user have the following privileges(any one of them):
1. Site visitor
2. Read permission.

It might be that I some use a specific command that requires some
permission setting that you don't allow your users:
What are the exact privileges you user use (first check Site Settings -
> People And Groups -> Site Permissions to see which site permission
are used, if the site permissions are custom, click Settings ->
Permission Levels and click on the permission level to get the
specific details of the permission level.
