Dear Colleagues,

Please, forward the call for applications below to potential PhD students interested in solving complex industrial multiobjective optimization problems, thanks!

With best regards, Kaisa Miettinen
------------------------------------------

Call for applications: Open PhD student position at the Industrial Optimization Group @ University of Jyvaskyla, Finland

Thesis topic: Decision Support for Complex Industrial Multiobjective Optimization Problems

A funded full time PhD position is open in a three-year project and involves generous support to attend international conferences and adequate exposure to industrial problems. Opportunities for research visits to the University of Surrey and Honda Research Institute in Germany are also available. The project involves close collaboration with Prof. Yaochu Jin from the University of Surrey, UK who will work as a Finland Distinguished Professor at the University of Jyv?skyl?.

Outline of the project: Innovation and short product design cycles have increasingly become important to industries due to globalization. Multiobjective optimization can be used as a tool for product innovation by finding better product designs quickly. However, multiobjective optimization problems in industry are often complex involving a large number of objectives and are computationally expensive. In addition, supporting a human decision maker and involving her/him during optimization are rarely considered in complex multiobjective optimization problems. In this research, ways are to be proposed to handle above-mentioned complex multiobjective optimization problems using computational intelligence techniques and an intelligent decision support prototype tool. The output of this research is set to alleviate the hindrance in using multiobjective optimization in industry, thereby significantly enhancing innovation and competitiveness of the Finnish industries.

Applicant should have

?         basic knowledge of multiobjective optimization (as well as continuous mathematical optimization). Furthermore, knowledge of evolutionary algorithms is desirable

?         hands-on programming skills and solid knowledge of mathematics

?         high motivation to work in algorithm development as well as their industrial applications

?         proficiency in English language (evidence necessary, visit: https://www.jyu.fi/it/en/study/postgraduate/application/ )

?         willingness to work as an active member of the Industrial Optimization Group and bear responsibility of one's own duties within the group

?         MSc in computer science, mechanical or electrical engineering, applied mathematics, statistics or any other related subjects.

About the group: The Industrial Optimization Group http://www.mit.jyu.fi/optgroup/ of the University of Jyv?skyl?, Finland, is a part of the Department of Mathematical Information Technology and is headed by Prof. Kaisa Miettinen. The research interests of the group are focused on developing theory, methods and software for solving real-world (continuous) optimization problems, especially when multiple nonlinear objectives are involved.

Application process:
Interested students are asked to send an email with a brief motivation, a CV and contact information of two persons who can provide recommendation letters to Prof. Kaisa Miettinen<http://users.jyu.fi/~miettine/index.html> (kaisa.miettinen @jyu.fi<mailto:kaisa.m...@jyu.fi>) and Prof. Yaochu Jin (yaoch...@surrey.ac.uk<mailto:yaoch...@surrey.ac.uk>) ASAP.
Deadline: February 3, 2015

"MIXED-INTEGER NONLINEAR OPTIMIZATION METHODS FOR ENERGY SYSTEMS
ENGINEERING"

March 9-10, 2015, RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany

Description
-----------

The OPTIMIZATION-BASED DESIGN OF ENERGY SYSTEMS generally leads to
mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems. In recent years, a
surge of interest in (non-convex) MINLP problems in the mathematical
optimization community produced remarkable algorithmic progress and
triggered new developments, in particular new implementations.

To benefit most from these advances, ENGINEERS AND MATHEMATICIANS should
tie up, each contributing their own expertise. Aim of this workshop is
to bring together researchers from both fields to learn about the latest
work and to foster collaborations.

The workshop consists of INVITED TALKS on recent work, complemented by
THREE KEYNOTES delivered by the following distinguished speakers.

Invited Speakers
----------------

* Prof. Dr. Zdravko Kravanja, University of Maribor, Slovenia: "Robust
MINLP for solving complex synthesis problems"
* Prof. Dr. Jeffrey T. Linderoth, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA:
"Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Optimization: Applications, Algorithms, and
Computation"
* Dr. Stefan Vigerske, GAMS Software GmbH, Zuse Institute Berlin: "MINLP
Solver Technology"

Organization
------------

The number of participants is limited to 60. Registration to the
workshop is required. The fee amounts to 50 Euro (incl. lunch and coffee
& tea). See the workshop website at
http://www.or.rwth-aachen.de/minomese2015 for more details and registration.

Important Dates:
* January 31, 2015: Registration closes
* March 9-10, 2015: Workshop
