PHD FELLOWSHIPS AT THE NORWEGIAN UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (NTNU)
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Department of Computer Science at NTNU has vacancies for two
PhD-positions, one on the topic of AI for databases, the other on
large-scale processing of dynamic graphs. The positions are funded by SFI
NorwAI (
https://www.ntnu.edu/norwai), the new 8-year research-based
innovation Center for AI Innovation, and the PERSEUS doctoral
programme (
https://www.ntnu.edu/perseus).
PhD 1: AI for Databases
The aim of this PhD position is to develop techniques that use AI to
improve efficiency of database systems. Examples of topics in this
direction from recent years include learned indexes, machine learning
for query optimization, data cleaning, and algorithm selection. The
PhD student will work with challenges related to these or other
emerging topics within AI for databases. The research outcome is
expected to produce high-quality publications in top database/data
mining venues.
PhD 2: Algorithms for Large-Scale Processing of Dynamic Graphs
For many important applications, data is presented as graphs, with
dynamic relationships between nodes. Examples include graphs
representing the power grid, financial transaction relationships,
social networks, and transportation networks. The nodes in the graphs
can also have attached dynamic data, for example time series, adding
further challenges. The PhD student will develop techniques
(algorithms and frameworks) for efficient processing of dynamic
graphs, and the research outcome is expected to produce high-quality
publications in top database/data mining venues.
The main supervisor for both positions will be Professor Kjetil Nørvåg.
Relevant background: A solid knowledge of algorithms, database
systems, or data mining. A research-oriented master thesis within one
of these or related areas are expected. Good programming skills are
required. An ability/desire to publish in top academic conferences is
essential.
Since Trondheim is a bilingual city where almost everybody speaks and
understands English fluently, candidates need not be afraid of a
language barrier. The working language of the research group is
English.
