I know what you are thinking when you read this title: no way, its not possible, wow, how. That's the kind of reaction i get when i tell someone that i learned swimming through YouTube. Through this article, I am not suggesting you to go out and start using your ipad to swim, and i was doing it in a safe environment after informing the life guards at the swimming pool location.
In 2012, i started having back-pain due to an injury in the back and although i tried different physical therapies none of it was permanent solution to the back pain. My doctor suggested that regular swimming could be a permanent solution so i wanted to try it out and wanted to stretch myself by learning it online.
The first step was to find a video on YouTube that actually teaches you to swim right from scratch instead of showing you how to learn swimming in 5 mins. I learned Swimming in 2012 when YouTube didn't have as many videos but today there are lot of step by step videos on YouTube and i am surprised to see a course on Udemy that teaches you how to learn Swimming ( =swimming).
I remember asking my professor in the B-School that do you think we will have 100% online learning someday without the need for classrooms and as expected his response was "NO, not everybody can learn online". And i understand discipline is a very big component of learning online but Corona-virus pandemic has accelerated online learning and as we have seen in the past few months kids have adapted to the new way of learning.
Kids are exploring new ways of interacting with their friend, and not just interacting they are doing activities online with their friends. For example, my daughter and her friends meet every week to bake vegetarian cookies, cakes, muffins etc. She learned it from her friend during the pandemic and now its a weekly activity where they do it together on a Zoom call.
She has created groups with her friends for painting, singing and many other activities on a video call. They will spend sometime together searching for a painting online and than all of them will make the same painting and share with each other.
Similarly, my Son, who is an avid gamer, has created his discord channel for interacting with his school friends who share common interest. He and his friends figured out that discord was a better solution to interact for them than Zoom or Skype.
I understand that face to face interactions cannot be replaced with virtual interactions, and 100% virtual may not be the answer but post Corona i envision a hybrid world, where activities that can be productively done virtually will be transferred online and other activities will stay physical. For example, imagine a hybrid School where Math, English and other activities are being taught online on Monday and Wednesday but Kids come to School on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday to play, do science experiments, physical training etc. This will also reduce the cost of education making it more affordable. Similarly, workplaces may become more flexible where you go to office for social gatherings, important weekly and monthly meetings on particular days while working from anywhere during other days. Entrepreneurs are already building billion dollar companies with remote teams across the world.
National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) of India has ventured into the online movie streaming space with the launch of Cinemasofindia.com. The site offers films in three categories- free, videos on demand (on subscription basis) and pay-per-view (PPV) films.
The UX is pretty intuitive and works well on Wi-Fi. There is one interesting feature called 'lights off', which dims the background screen and lets the user watch the movie without distractions. Note that NFDC is a government cultural body that supports and promotes Indian films made in various regional languages on various platforms, so probably we can rule out availability of mainstream movies like Yeh Jawaani Hain Deewani, etc., on the platform going forward.
Other players that offer online movie streaming include BoxTV, ErosNow, BigFlix, Hungama, Spuul and Youtube. Recently, Bigflix.com rolled out a new feature that enables its subscribers to download movies and watch them offline at no additional cost. A similar service is offered by Eros Now as well. However, the movies currently offered by NFDC are not available on any of these sites.
