Pretty Little Liars opened with initially mixed critical reviews, although the series has gotten more positive critique over its progression. Metacritic gave the pilot episode 52 out of 100, based upon 14 critical reviews. The New York Daily News gave the show a positive review, commenting that it "makes most popular vampire romances look anemic" while concluding, "Pretty Little Liars could go in several directions, including mundane teen clichés. It's got an equally good shot at making us care about these imperfect pretty girls." A writer on Terror Hook has stated that "'Pretty Little Liars' gets off to a very promising start. Great production all around, the writing keeps the viewer on their toes, and the acting just reinforces it. The overall mystery of the show, in the end, is dark and unpredictable, even stepping into the slasher film realm." The New York Post gave the show three out of five stars, stating, "OK, so we've established that there is no socially redeeming value in this series and that your kids shouldn't watch it if they are too young and impressionable. But if you can distract them enough to miss the first 15 minutes, the show isn't half-bad. Actually, it is half-good, if that makes sense." The Los Angeles Times wrote that the series is "one of those shows that manages to mildly, and perhaps unintentionally, spoof its genre while fully participating in it, and that's not a bad thing at all."

Emily waved 'bye to her mom and pulled up the blah jeansthat were hanging on her skinny hips. Emily had been a competitive swimmer since Tadpole League, and even though she looked great in a Speedo, she never wore anything tight or remotely cute like the rest of the girls in her seventh-grade class. That was because Emily's parents insisted that one built character from the inside out. (Although Emily was pretty certain that being forced to hide her Irish Girls Do it Better baby tee at the back of her underwear drawer wasn't exactly character enhancing.)

Three years ago, Alison disappeared after a slumber party, not to be seen since. Her friends at the elite Pennsylvania school mourned her, but they also breathed secret sighs of relief. Each of them guarded a secret that only Alison had known. Now they have other dirty little secrets, secrets that could sink them in their gossip-hungry world. When each of them begins receiving anonymous emails and text messages, panic, sets in. Are they being betrayed by some one in their circle? Worse yet: Is Alison back? A strong launch for a suspenseful series.

And that worry was always front and center in the mind of executive producer Marlene King, who wrote last night's episode, "Game Over, Charles." "I didn't want people to think that this person was a villain because of their gender identity," she told BuzzFeed News in a phone interview. "She was a villain because she came from a very, very crazy family, so genetically she is probably a little crazy too. It was really important to us as a show and to the studio and the network that people took away that message exactly. We didn't want to go backwards for the trans community, we wanted to go forward."

When we last left the liars, they won the game, and A.D. was riding off in the sunset as Harry Nilsson's \"Without You\" played on the soundtrack. And one year later, the girls are thriving.Aria and her fiance Ezra Fitz learn that their book, \"Then And Now,\" will be made into a movie and are about to finally get married. Emily and Alison are happily raising their daughters Grace and Lilly together. Spencer and her sister Melissa Hastings are getting along, and Spencer is also reunited with her ex-boyfriend Toby Cavanaugh, with the two still clearly sharing feelings for each other. Even Jenna has found her calling as Rosewood High School's life skills teacher.Though Hanna's fashion designs are taking off and her husband Caleb Rivers sold software to their friend Lucas Gottesman, the couple are in a fight about Mona Vanderwaal, who has completed her treatment and come to live with Hanna and Caleb in the loft they bought from Lucas. Caleb doesn't trust Mona and believes Hanna is making decisions without thinking about how they affect their relationship.Later, at the Lost Woods resort, the gang comes together to surprise Aria and Ezra with a party before their wedding. Meanwhile, Mona disappears from Hanna and Caleb's apartment, and Melissa, wearing a black hoodie synonymous with the A-Team, is watching Spencer, Toby, Emily, Alison, Aria, Ezra, Hanna and Caleb from afar.As the couples retire to their rooms, Spencer, who has been going to law school full time, and Toby find themselves alone. They end up playing Scrabble in Toby's room, and after Toby falls asleep, Spencer finishes their game.

Outside, Toby catches Spencer before she takes the drunk moms home. He tells her he knows she finished their game of Scrabble with the word \"limerence,\" which is a type of unrequited love. And Ezra leaves Aria, upset because Aria admits she knew for a while she couldn't have children. At their home, Emily confronts Alison because she saw her mom give her something secretly. It turns out Emily's mom gave Alison her grandmother's ring to propose to her with. You loved me when I was an ugly human being,\" Alison tells Emily. \"You make me a better woman because you searched for one. Do you promise to do that every day for the rest of our lives?\"Spencer finds Toby in his hotel room wearing nothing but a towel. The towel comes off and they find themselves in bed. Afterwards, Spencer hears a piano being played as she gets out of the shower. Mona, dressed in a black hoodie, steps out from behind her and knocks her out.Spencer wakes up locked in a room and encounters her identical twin, as Emily and Alison learn that Mary Drake escaped from prison. Mary appears and injects Spencer with something to sleep. As she comes to, Spencer, chained to the floor, meets her twin Alex Drake, who has a British accent and the initials A.D.Wren met Alex in London while she was working as a bartender and told her about Spencer. Wren and Alex quickly began a relationship, and Alex reveals that she took over the game as uber A when Charlotte, Spencer's half-sister, died. \"I needed the closure,\" she tells Spencer. \"On my own terms.\"Alex has been studying Spencer's life, including her family photos. She's also the one who comforted Hanna when she was being tortured and hooked up with Toby before he moved away. When the game was over, Alex returned to London but she couldn't stop thinking about the liars, even though Wren tried to dissuade her. \"Spencer has got everything and I got nothing,\" Alex told Wren in a flashback. Alex wanted to know what it felt like to have friends like Spencer's who love each other no matter what happened. Wren implores Alex to give up the game and tell the girls the truth, but she convinces him that she needs to become Spencer. She even has Wren shoot her so that she has the same gunshot scar as Spencer.

Chandler Kinney, 21, is another former child star in the Original Sin cast. She was a disruptive, artistic kid in Southern California, always dancing around the backyard or directing her older brothers in little homemade films. Her mom put her in dance lessons at age three to get out some of her boundless energy, and Kinney ended up pursuing it professionally as she got older.

"We thought this would be a really good story. It's an exaggeration at some bits but a lot of it rings true for both of us. It was a really fun thing to do. I'm excited and nervous and feeling a little vulnerable because it's my story," Mitchell admits to CBS News.

On why she wanted to write a novel: "I've always been an avid book reader, everything from 'Sweet Valley High' to Jackie Collins and Danielle Steel. And I was finding that in my mid-20s that I couldn't find a book that was age-appropriate for what I was going through. It was either a little bit older-skewed -- about women going through a divorce, or a little bit younger."

Pretty Little Liars started off simply enough, introducing us to the core Liars: Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields, and Alison DiLaurentis, who is missing and presumed to be dead at the start of the show. From there, though, the story got more than a little complicated as the Liars tried to uncover the identity of A, a mysterious person who has wreaked havoc on their lives.

At the end of the series, Wren is discovered to have also gotten involved with Spencer's previously unheard of evil twin, Alex Drake. Alex gleefully tells Spencer that Wren clearly has a type. While Alex is at least of legal age when she and Wren get together, it's still more than a little alarming that he gets involved with not just two but three sisters. Alex later eliminates Wren and has his ashes turned into a diamond pendant in what has to be one of the most complicated series finales in television history.

What's their secret? Did they cheat their way through their exams? Pay someone to do their homework for them? Or did the high school want to get rid of the Liars and their drama so badly that they let them graduate in spite of what surely must have been some pretty low grades?

Pretty Little Liars' Radley Sanitarium houses a number of mentally ill patients over the years, including CeCe Drake and Mona Vanderwaal, who was the first person to take on the identity of A. Even Spencer spent some time there. All in all, the place is tied to some pretty bad memories, so it seems like an unusual choice when Hanna's mom later buys it and turns it into a posh hotel. She doesn't even change the name of the place, and The Radley becomes the gang's hangout spot after the show's five-year time jump.
