Yes, there is multiplayer: go to the title screen, press start to get you to the story mode and battle mode options, go to battle mode(NOT the pre-set option), and then go to gang battle, select the rules and stuff, and then plug in the...game boy. You can't play with 2-4 controllors, but you can link in the game boy with the special cable and battle. You can do this with up to 4 players. If you are thinking about winning with your starting pokemon straight away, then you better think again, because it takes up a lot of leveling up to get the better evolutions and good moves, but you have to snag pokemon, so once you have a team of 6 power packers in your team(I like using *spoiler* MT battle *end spoiler* for leveling up my pokemon, they may seem weak at first, but as you get to the 70th battle in MT battle, the pokemon get rough), then you should try the battle mode so you have a good chance at winning.
