Hello Louis,

Are you going to support Spark in future?

Many projects already use it, but it doesn't even support MVC2RC yet.
If you don't have enough time, perhaps the community does. You could just take and review the branches with the fixes from github and release them. Somebody could implement intellisense for VS2010, somebody else could document undocumented features, we could also implement MVC2 new features compatibility, for example IHtmlString support, so that at lease the latest release is up-to-date.

What do you think?

Sincerely,
Pavel Zhur

Hi Pavel,

Your wish is my command. I've merged outstanding pull requests from
github, created mvc-1.0 and mvc-2 branches, and moved the "master"
branch onto the mvc-2 line so the codebetter CI server will be
producing that output.

There are a few things related to MVC 2 on my radar, including
IHtmlString support, but I agree an organized community is the way to
go moving forward.

Anyone have thoughts about steps to take along those lines?

Thanks,
Lou

I quite like this mailing list as far as a community.

I think I can speak for everybody in saying that we all pretty much consider you as BDFL as far as it comes for Spark. Perhaps simply publicly choosing a couple of Number 2s would do wonders for increasing activity.

These persons should have the following capabilities:
push new code to some authoritative repository (perhaps to yours, perhaps to one for some new user on git like how castle is going; it becomes authoritative if you say so)
resolve issues over at codeplex

(other capabilities/responsibilities would be up to you to give away)

They should be people you trust to do good things with the codebase and they should want to do it.

I would like it if decisions being made would be done on list because transparency is great and breeds trust, but as far as I am concerned everything is ultimately your call.

Sounds good - I noticed something Fluent NHibernate seems to have a practice where some coordinators take pull requests onto an integration branch that is merged onto the master. I used an integration branch this last round of pulls when I was moving code, so there's one out there, but advancing the integration branch could be a first step towards distributing commit rights.

Codeplex and documentation management also sounds like a fantastic thing to delegate authority.

Would this work best as a volunteer or nomination type of thing? Any opinions about active individuals people they would be suited for the role?

Louis,

I am not sure if this is the best idea for me, but I could help with your builds and build server stuff.  I am already doing it for a number of projects on the Codebetter server,  I could also contribute some build automation as well,  Auto publishing to codeplex for example.  I wish I could commit more time but I need to keep the wheels moving on my projects as well.  I know you did not ask for this role, but based on what I know it is the most value that I can provide given the amount of time I can commit to it.

Thanks,
Eric

Jeff, in support of your email, here is an email I drafted a couple of
days ago that I think share the spirit of your message:

I'm not sure if this point has been raised yet, so forgive me if this
is redundant.

I know I came to use Spark because of the web-based application
development that I do. As an engineer that has a stronger background
in web programming than tool development, I admit that I am hesitant
to try and tackle the intricacies of the Spark compiler and other
tools.

With that being said, I have spent plenty of my spare time taking a
look at the source code and unit tests for the parts of Spark that I
am least familiar with. My hope is that one day I will understand it
enough to contribute to the development of it.

I wanted to put that out there in case there are other developers on
this list that would like to contribute to Spark, but just don't feel
ready to do so yet.

----

I'm wondering if a virtual series of code walk-throughs would help
stir up interest in using Spark and contributing to Spark? Thoughts?

Yep, sounds like a common thread - the need for design notes.
