In 2015, it was announced that Dobrev would leave the show following The Vampire Diaries season 6 finale. Many leaped on the notion that her break-up with co-star Ian Somerhalder (who played Damon) fueled the decision. However, that turned out to be erroneous, with the pair remaining good friends until this day. In actual fact, Dobrev revealed in an Instagram post that she'd always viewed Elena's journey as being one comprised of six seasons. Across that time, as Dobrev also stated that she'd played "a human, a vampire, a doppelgänger, a crazy immortal, a doppelgänger pretending to be human, a human pretending to be a doppelgänger." Equally, her many characters had been "kidnapped, killed, resurrected, tortured, cursed, body-snatched, enjoyed two epic on-screen romances, and much more."
The fourth season of The Vampire Diaries was the most divisive. It saw Elena completing her transition from human to vampire, the beginnings of Delena, and some emotional deaths that brand-new teen drama villains brought. This installment saw plenty of highs with new lore and romance, but it dipped to incredible lows with the appearance of the Hunters and Silas.
The reason why The Vampire Diaries became a cult-like hit was because of a stellar first season. It fed into the ongoing undead fantasy frenzy Twilight had stoked a couple of years prior, but it was not a regurgitated story. This season set the stage with its myths and legends, uncovering elements like vervain, daylight rings, and vampire vegetarianism at a fantastic pace, pulling audiences in with every episode.
The crowning moment of Season 3 was the sudden murder of Elena by Rebekah. The two had shared a contentious relationship, but fans could not have guessed that the Original sister would be why Elena turned from human to vampire. Katherine's wiliness with some old-fashioned scheming only improved the already fabulous third season full of shocking twists.
Bonnie and Enzo's romance was the most unexpected twist, but one that was full of sweet moments that fans loved. Similarly, Stefan and Caroline's wedding was a lovely diversion from the final season's darkness. Even Matt Donovan's family got the importance it deserved from the beginning, tying their fates with the town's. Undoubtedly, the finale made this a 100% season: Katherine and Elena's return, the brotherly sacrifice, the complete character arcs, and even setting up the next spin-off was done to perfection.
The Vampire Diaries only upped the momentum with its sophomore outing, resulting in one of the most well-crafted seasons in television history. Season 2 saw the rise of the Original vampires, led by hybrid Klaus who was unbeatable and ruthless. Even worse, he was out for Elena as she could help unleash his wolf side. This season also saw the addition of werewolves to the rota, creating delicious tension between them and the vampires while also creating a fascinating romance between vampire Caroline and wolf Tyler.
Elena is changed into a vampire during the show's third season as an 18-year-old, so that means she wouldn't age past being a teen, though Dobrev continued playing her through six seasons. Dobrev also returned for the series finale in 2017 when she was 28.
I prepped for the viewing by doing a complete rewatch of season 8. To jump into the finale cold would be to make myself far too susceptible to the very effective and not-at-all-subtle emotional manipulations that The Vampire Diaries deploys in the form of its soundtrack and the otherworldly beauty and expression of its actors. I wanted to have the whole season fresh so I was fully able to interrogate and enjoy the story aspects of the series finale as well.
Stefan and Caroline's friendship had been strong for a few seasons, but finally cultivated into l-o-v-e during Season 6. (Praise!) He was there for her as she mourned the loss of her mother, the two shut off their humanity together, and basically, totally fell in love (read: had very aggressive vampire sex).

The Vampire Diaries is one of the most popular vampire YA fiction series of all time, predating even the Twilight Saga fandom! The first book made its debut in 1991 and was quickly followed by three sequels. After a decade-long hiatus, author L.J. Smith revived the series with more volumes that explored the characters and world she introduced 30 years ago, buoyed to new heights by the popularity of the television adaptation. The Vampire Diaries premiered on the CW in 2009 and ran for eight seasons, attracting new and old fans alike.
