Google verification with blank captcha

I recently had reason to "Start Over" on my spanning sync installation
(latest version as of today), and when I enter the Spanning Sync
PrefPane to enter my GMail account username and password, I get a pop-
up after I authenticate that asks me to fill out a captcha

The pop-up states, "Google requires that you verify your account
information." It asks for my "Account name" and "Password," just as
before, but then also has a blank spot where evidently a captcha is
supposed to appear, and the text says "Enter the correct password
above and then type the characters you see in the picture below."

Problem is, there's no "picture below." It's blank.

I use Google "two-step" authentication, and I did generate a special
password for Spanning Sync, just as I had done previously. It used to
work just fine, but no longer!

Note that the blank captcha pop-up appears whether I use my regular
Google password OR my specially created Google two-step "application
specific" password. I've also tried adding and removing the @gmail.com
portion of my username, but to no avail.

Help?

Hi Aaron,

I'd suggest signing into your Google account using your web browser.
You should get the same CAPTCHA request and you should be able to
verify it there. Once it's verified, try signing into Spanning Sync
again.

Hi Byron,

Seems to work now! Although when I authenticated in a fresh browser
(no cookies, cleared cache, etc.) I didn't do the captcha, just the
two-step authentication.
