Sync iPhone with iCloud to iCal to Google Calendar - can I do this?

I have a new iPhone 4S which nicely syncs my mobile calendar to the
calendar I have on my MacBook running Lion. Unfortunately, my iMac is
too old and is only running Snow Leopard. I'd like them all to be in
sync. Can I use Spanning Sync in this way?

What I'm imagining is that the iPhone syncs to the MacBook with
iCloud, then Spanning Sync syncs the MacBook and the iMac, all using
Google Calendar. Then changes in any place are reflected on all the
other devices and computers.

Is this possible?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Byron,

I've read that blog post before but it doesn't really give me the clear answer I need, about whether Spanning Sync will work with iCloud in the way I've described. I know I can use it to sync iCal and Google Calendar, but what happens when I add in a sync to iCloud from one machine (the one running Lion) only?

If you can provide an answer to that, then I'll know whether I can buy Spanning Sync. I don't want to set it up and then have it delete all my calendars and contacts b/c I did something wrong!

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

If you're using iCloud to sync calendars and especially contacts, you
won't be able to do what you're wanting using Spanning Sync.

I've setup a similar situation using Spanning Sync and Google rather than iCloud.  Yeah, it's an extra step, and it can take a little work getting it to work, but once it does, it's incredibly stable and responsive.

You don't have to switch to Google Calendar, Contacts, and Gmail, you can just use it as a sync source. Spanning has done an amazing job getting the Google APIs and quirks to play nicely with the Mac and iOS environments.

Google starts to explain the iOS setup routine here: http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=138740

Going this route via Google allows me to sync 2 Macs, 1 PC (Google Apps Sync), 2 iPads, 1 iPod Touch, and an Android phone.  It's incredible.

I hope that gives you a glimmer of hope.
