I'm looking for some input, please. I'll start by saying that the only planes I've flown in SPA have been Daddy Rabbit variants. All of these fly very well - some better than others. I haven't flown any of the Kaos/Chaos series airplanes in competition since I flew a Super Kaos 60 waaaay back at the start of my pattern career around 1980. I'm curious how the flight characteristics of the Killer Chaos and Ultimate Kaos compare with those of the Daddy Rabbit and Dirty Birdy, particularly in the upper classes. I talked to Jerry Black about this, but I'd like some other opinions as well?

Thanks,
Jim

Like you, my plane list is very limited. I had 2 40 size Kaos which I loved and which got me interested in pattern. Realizing that good old Joe B campaigned his Dirty Birdies at the last legal year of our allowed plane list, I chose the DB and have been very pleased. I always felt he was ahead of the curve. My experience with other planes has not been as happy due to size mostly. Since I fly with a few SPA pilots up here I hear what they say and the discussions have been fruitful. To make a long story short, I will start a Bootlegger this year even though I have two brand new painted DB-E fuses waiting for wings.    Vic K

You said your DB E fuses are waiting on wings?  Were you waiting on me? 😯

I'm not waiting on you because I generally destroy only the fuse when I crash and can reuse the wings. If you can believe it, I was showing off today and hit the wrong rudder. The wings are still good but I may get you to do a DB set as well as the Bootlegger when you are ready. Both are winter builds. I know your work is seasonal so when would be a good time for you t cut them and one Bootlegger stab?  Vic

Vic, build some Curares. They'z extra coool looking.
Sure you could build them light and Purrrrty :).
Mike W.'s El Curare is fast and cool. Problem I've having is the dang two stroke vibration and cheap China steel for the nose retract Stinks. Love the retracts if nothing else, it makes its hauling a lot easier, plus you can retract them for the extra cool look. Honestly, there is very little feel difference up vs down but there is some.
The ole Carl Goldberg nylon mechanicals were the best ever, never known anyone to wear them out.

Jamie, I have really thought about the Curare. I think it's one of the prettiest ever designed.  Vic

Not just the prettiest but the best grooving plane of the era. Back then, speed was king. Faster ya went, the easier the not perfect building errors could be noticed or covered up.  That Jerry B is the Only fellow that has mastered the SPA patterns at 50-60mph, no plus for going fast or slow, but it takes lots better sticks to do it slow. I've got to fly against that rascal next year, turning the big 60 😂

I've watched him practise lately and he's getting better. Good luck.  Vic

Jim,  If we have some downtime at Nooga,  you would be welcome to fly my Killer if you like.  It tracks pretty good with that long tail.  KE requires little to no mixing with the exception of a touch of opposite aileron, but I just fly it.  With the gear up and fast it rolls pretty axial.  With a 4strk you would want to move the firewall back some because both the 61fx and NR R60F barely fit.  The Bluejay kit can be built right around 6lbs. Mine is little more with that neon monokote and retracts. The Ultimate is like the Killer but with a Super like tail.  I read the reason Bridi moved the elevator forward was to help spin entry by effectively shortening the pitch moment.  But he moved it back for the Killer and Utter to soften pitch again.  The Ultimate came later as hybrid I think.  This is just what I've read by digging through Forums.  I'm by no means an expert on classic pattern,  just a guy that's interested and enjoying it.
