Planet Coaster - the future of coaster park simulation games has arrived! Surprise, delight and thrill incredible crowds as you build your coaster park empire - let your imagination run wild, and share your success with the world.

There are four different modes in the game, namely Sandbox, Challenge, Career, and Scenario Editor. In the career mode, players assume the role of a theme park manager and must complete tasks such as constructing unfinished roller coasters or hiring janitors. In Sandbox mode, players are tasked to construct their own theme park on an empty plot of land. The challenge mode is similar to the sandbox mode, but with added difficulty, as players need to take funds into account. The scenario mode, which was added in the 1.4.0 update on 22 November 2017, is similar to the career mode, but allows players to customise their own task in all saved parks.

Planet Coaster is a construction and management simulation video game. Similar to its spiritual predecessor, the game allows players to build different theme park rides and roller-coasters. These player-created attractions can be shared through a mechanic called "global village".[8] The game also comes with ten mascots.[9]

Similar to Frontier's previous game, RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, the Sandbox Mode enables players to construct their own theme park on an empty plot of land. In Sandbox Mode, all features and rides of the game are unlocked and the player's funds are unlimited. This is the mode most players use to create items (parks, coasters, scenery, etc.) and then post them to Steam's Planet Coaster Workshop (not available for Mac App Store version), or the Frontier Workshop on the console versions.[10]

In the Career Mode, the player must complete objectives such as constructing roller coasters, achieving park ratings or hiring janitors.[11] Similar to RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, Career Mode allows players to progress by completing scenarios with objectives in different difficulties.

The game was announced on January 29, 2015, by Frontier Developments.[20] Originally called Coaster Park Tycoon, the game was renamed into Planet Coaster on June 16, 2015, during the PC Gaming Show at E3 2015.[21] Frontier Developments aimed to turn the game into the company's second self-published franchise, along with the Elite series.[22] The game uses an advanced version of Cobra Engine, which is an in-house proprietary engine developed by Frontier previously used by games like Elite Dangerous and RollerCoaster Tycoon 3.[15] Features confirmed for the game include a hybrid spline/piece-by-piece coaster builder, modular structure building, a voxel terrain editor among others detailed through Q&A's and "Dev Diaries."[23] On the second live stream, the release date of the alpha was announced. Released on March 22, 2016, the alpha emphasized on modular building and paths. The alpha contained two themes: "Planet Coaster" and "Pirate". Although disabled by default, Coaster Building was included in the first alpha through a cheat code.[24]

On May 24, 2016, Frontier released the second alpha build. This build included finances, terrain tools, improved path building, and the official release of a coaster builder.[25] Also, on August 25, Frontier discontinued further alpha purchases.[26] On September 24, Frontier announced at EGX 2016 that players who had pre-ordered the "Thrillseeker Edition" would be able to test the game that October.[12][27] At Gamescom 2016, Frontier announced that the game would be released on November 17, 2016.[28] The game was released with Denuvo's anti-tamper technology.[29][30]

The game was met with praise upon release of the alpha. Andy Kelly of PC Gamer commented that Frontier was "off to a tremendous start", adding that creating buildings with the creation tools hinted at "immense possibilities".[67] However, Mark Walton of Ars Technica noted several small flaws including the "hard to navigate" menus and the lack of custom built roller coasters.[68] On 27 April 2016, about a month after the release of the alpha, Frontier announced that Planet Coaster had grossed nearly two million dollars.[69]

Coop. This is my number one requested feature. Imagine being able to play a sandbox game where you and your friends can work on the same park together. This would make the game a much more social experience. Me and my girlfriend both love Planet Coaster but there is no way to work on the same park without having to take turns, this feature would change that completely. Just look at what people are achieving while working together on projects in games like Rust, Minecraft, Ark etc.

VR. Imagine being able to ride your own roller coasters with a VR headset on and being able to look around. Just to walk around in your park and looking around with a VR headset would be an amazing experience.

The campaign levels do provide inspiration for my own parks, and can be exported into the freeform sandbox mode where funds are unlimited, terrain deformation is on, and there's no need to research rides and shops to unlock the good ones. Almost everything can be customized, encrusted with theming down to signs with your own text in a variety of fonts. If you're the kind of person who can happily spend hours designing a toilet block this will make you happy.

Challenge mode is where it's at. The need to budget provides structure, and challenges offer rewards for making a coaster a certain length, or for achieving a particular rating. My park grows, gaining burger and milkshake stalls, bins and janitors. People complain about the queues not only being long but also boring, so I go all out on theming. I fill my park with dragons, including an animatronic that eats guests and piles dragonpoop behind it. There's also the option to cop out and buy a golden treasure chest for $10,000, lazily guaranteeing instant happiness for customers near it.

Planet Coaster is made to create a certain kind of park, the guided experience where you turn a corner and suddenly see something amazing from the perfect angle. Trying to recreate something like Melbourne's Luna Park, where everything is anarchically plonked down within a big triangle you explore as you please, doesn't work so well. Like city simulators with grids that make every city look American, the pathing of Planet Coaster comes with implicit assumptions about what you want to build baked in.

Creations can be saved as a blueprint, so you can use them again, but this also lets you share them with the community by uploading to the Steam Workshop. If you download a building, you can place it in your park as is, or you can tweak it as much as you want, keeping the parts that you like. And entire sections of your park can be copied and moved elsewhere, making the huge endeavour of relocating buildings and shops and a monorail something that only takes a couple of clicks.

The Sandbox and Challenge modes are where Planet Coaster gets to show off its best features. They both give you a massive, empty plot of land, a blank slate, and then you're free to experiment and expand. The only difference between the modes is that in Sandbox you have unlimited money and every ride unlocked from the start, while Challenge adds the extra, and important, wrinkle of balancing budgets and keeping guests happy. They're both creative modes though.

The highly acclaimed Planet Coaster gives players limitless freedom to build rides and scenery piece by piece, with advanced management simulation gameplay and a connected global village where everyone can share in the creativity of players around the world. Planet Coaster continues to be supported with regular updates, adding even more creative options for players. That creativity is unleashed by the Steam Workshop community hub, where coaster fanatics and creators from around the world can upload and share in-game blueprints of parks, buildings and coasters!
