running 

spack  install perl

I got an error. 

How to fix it?

A work-around is to install "perl @5.34.0" instead (the previous
version); this circumvents the problem for me.

Hi  Erik ,
this problem has been appeared when I "spack install pythia6"

I have perl installed on my system 

perl --version

This is perl 5, version 30, subversion 3 (v5.30.3) built for x86_64-linux-thread-multi

Is it possible to avoid building perl from source (I even cannot understand why it is required)

but use the existing system wide perl?
